Hello, Mystic.
I think most of us here on the board have felt what you're feeling. I've been on Lexapro for about 12 weeks, but there were a few times when I considered very seriously stopping it. But I stuck with it, and now I'm glad I did.

Occasionally I still feel that overwhelming feeling, but I know when I feel it, and that's when I let myself think ahead. It's when I "see" tomorrow and the next day and the next as being the same as it is in that particular moment. You can't do that, Mystic, I know I can't. You mentioned that you tried to think of one day at a time. Well, guess what, you're thinking too far ahead when you do that. It takes practice, just as any learned behavior does, but you can do it -- Take life one moment at a time, Myst. Think about the "now" as they say. Look at what you're doing in any given moment, and think about what you need to do to get through that moment. That's the secret, trust me, when I let myself go and start thinking about next week, or next month, that's when I feel the anxiety and depression creeping back into my mind.

Please keep posting on the board, and any time that you feel especially vulnerable, or when you're having a particularly bad moment, just write on the board exactly what you feel, and one of us will answer you. Tell us exactly what you're feeling, we can relate, and it will make you feel less alone in your thoughts.

Keep taking the Lexapro, it will kick in, we all have been through the period when we wondered if and when it was going to start working for us, and it did.

Take care of yourself, Myst. God Bless.

Ah, time for the fountain of useless information....enter Vandy!

I've been trying to piece together the details of yesterday to try and figure out what brought it on. The only thing I can come up with is that I was totally exhausted when I finally made it to bed last night, and about 10 minutes after I lay down is when the attack hit. Just as you said, it was a rather minor attack, it's just the fact that I had one that bothers me most.

So I guess if I absolutely had to find something good about that panic attack, it's the fact that it was more of a nuisance that anything else. This time even the fear of the attack took a back seat to the nuisance. I realized this after it was all over with, does that mean we actually get use to panic attacks? (ya gotta laugh)

I think I sense real anger in you. In my humble opinion, that's one thing that Lex doesn't steal from you. I love my ups and downs. Oh, that reminds me of the sex thing. My wife and I are a happy Lexapro couple, she starting to take it about seven months before I did. Somehow we manage to get her where she wants to go and she crashes in my arms going to sleep with a smile on her face. We're sixty years of age. If it gets back to great for us old fogies I'll bet it gets good again for you. Please don't let your anger abuse you. It's very useful for other than the reasons previously mentioned as long as it doesn't do you ill. Good luck, keep the faith and wait with a little patience. It'll come. (oh, Vandy!)

> Yep, I have had that. I swear it shrunk the enjoyment personal part down there too. If it were not for viagra, I would feel nothing at all. This drug is merciless in the sex dept. If I wasn't so damn depressed, I would throw it in the garbage yesterday. Also, I think Lexapro makes you more wet, but with no sexual stimulation. I mean you are just a unsensitive wet vessel with this stuff. That isn't a good receipe for good sex either. I truly think most women are not as aggressive in checking out themselves and see what's really going on down there. They are too busy worrying about how to make sure they please someone else or looking sexy. I mean it's your body for Pete's sake. Women better look and see the real deal, because the ob/gyn and your partner is. GEES! As a previous medical professional, I was horrified to learn how so many woman are so ignorant of how their personal equipment looked and functioned. Furthermore, I get really piffed off when I hear women say oh my husband doesn't mind my lack of interest, since taking lexapro. Yeah, I guess so. He still can have sex with you and have an orgasm guaranteed. You will just not get a darn thing out of it with your Antisexapro. I always wonder how many pregnant women really had an orgasm with the conception of their child. Hmmm, well we can only tell one partner did. I guess I am not laying down on this horrible antisexual side effect from this med. DAMN! Stepping off my soap box. Whew!!
>
> I am just really ticked off with the choices or should I say lack of choices for an antidepressant that doesn't turn me into a totally nonsexual fat being. I guess I have a lot of pent up tension from NEVER having any pleasure without another drug on board. To tell the truth, I am thinking about sticking this trash down a toilet. I am just plain sick of it. It's enough to make me scream. Hmm, maybe, it isn't working on the depression that well after all.
>
> *Believe it or not I edited this post to tame down the graphic nature of my complaints.*
>
> Thanks sexylady for the post and to the other women who posted. At least, you are telling the truth.

Hooray for you. Get on that treadmill and give it a ride. You deserve it! And you can dismiss the guilt for the impulse purchase if you give it a good workout. It's magic. It's a great source of endorphins which help the lex function in its good ways. I'm so happy for you.

> Ok everybody . . . what the heck was going on this weekend?!?! I too had an anxiety blow-up late Saturday night! It's the weekend before my period starts and I've had a cold all week so feel a little worn out. Also, the meds just don't seem strong enough to overcome my monthly hormonal swing. The obsessive, cloying, overwhelming, negative self-talk feelings abated as the day went by, thank goodness.

Reminds me of a story about a money manager after the 1987 stock market crash. They asked him if it bothered him. He said, "Gee, I slept like a baby. I woke up every 15 minutes and cried."

> Well Mark,
>
> I've been on Lex twice now, last year and just started again this year (should never have gotten off it the first time). This time I had a very bad experience of not being able to sleep while taking it and waking up every 15 minutes with panicky feelings. They tell me those go away after awhile (4-6 weeks) but I couldn't take it. It was driving me crazy. So, now, in addition to the Lex, I take Clonazepam to deal with the anxiety. The doc says that should be fairly short term, though, until the Lex really has a chance to kick in. I don't know if this is what you wanted to hear, but that's been my experience with it. The first time it worked great, but this second time has been hell. I'm doing pretty good now with the mix of the two drugs, though. I've been on it a couple of weeks now. I'm not sure what advice to give you except to maybe try it and see how your body reacts to it. Maybe if anxiety is your only trouble, not depression, it would be best just to try to the Clonazepam. I don't know. I'm not a doctor. Best of luck to you and keep us posted on what you decide to do and how it goes.

-------------------------------------------------

Mystic, you were so right when you wrote that it's the compassionate people who usually deal with anxiety and depression. Of course you know there's a reason for that, don't you?

Concerning how long it took for my depression and anxiety to go away after I started Lexapro, I can honestly say that the depression started lifting in less than a week. I'm not saying it went completely away, but it was certainly at a point that I could deal with easier than the week before.
The anxiety was another matter, because one of the side effects of Lexapro is a feeling of anxiety or a "wired" feeling as I felt it to be. Also, sometimes it's difficult to sleep when taking Lexapro. If you're not already on an anti-anxiety med, something like clonazepam or lorazepam, you may want to ask your doctor about giving you something to help with that side effect.
Plus, it's imperative that you get enough sleep at this time. If you're not sleeping well, please ask your doctor for something so that you can get a good night's sleep. Lack of sleep leads to stress, and stress is a precursor of depression, so getting enough sleep is an absolute necessity. I take lorazepam when I feel that I need to as well as a sleeping pill.

As far as my particular dosage, I was on 10 mg's of Lex, but lowered the dosage myself to 7.5. I've been on 7.5 for about two or three weeks, and I'm not certain that I'll be able to stay on the lower dose yet, but I'm giving it a shot.

Just remember, Myst, it doesn't hurt to get help in the form of a medication, especially when we're going through some of life's toughest times.

Take care, Mystic, and please keep posting on the board. God Bless.

Good luck to you Lexy. I believe that you and I are in pretty much the same situation. I have been on Lexapro for 10 weeks as well, but was upped to 20mg from 10mg yesterday after a meeting with the pdoc. I woke up this morning with the same difficulty I had when I first starting taking the drug, but I know it will take time for my body to adjust again. You will get back to your old self again just like I will.

Hi Vandy ~
Thanks for your vote of confidence & all your fun/supportive posts in general :-)! It'll be delivered on Sunday & I can't wait to get started. This is one of many things I've wanted to start and the Lex has actually allowed me to not only start new things, but follow through and finish several of them!!

In another post you revealed your age and the fact that you can still make your wife happy in certain areas. I'm 40 & having trouble in that area with the Lex, but to hear that from a 60-year old couple on Lex is very encouraging!

Nick-

Things aren't going too bad, how about you? They wanted to bump me up to 20mg because of all of the negative thoughts I continue to have. I don't like the fact that the fatigue side effect has really set in again, but I know it will go away soon. Hopefully I will be able to stay on this dosage for awhile. I could really notice a change for the better on 10mg, but I know I'm not where I want to be yet. I go back at the end of the month for talk therapy as well as another checkup to see how my dosage is treating me.

Are you still having the same negative thoughts you were before? if so i'm sorry to hear that..i know it takes time..although i felt much better after a couple of months, the first time i got an AD's it took a good 5-6 months before i really felt back to my old self...but to me it sounds like you are doing exactly what you should be doing in following up with your doc so you will be OK..

as for how im doing now i am doing well..still not 100% but doing things one day at a time and feeling good most of the time..

Thanks! I started taking it at 10pm, still didn't help. My doctor prescribed Ambien for a week. I did that and slept so well I can see why people get addicted to it! I had 2 days of only 3 hours a night after I went off it though; I felt terrible (withdrawal I guess?) Then I tried benadryl for a couple of days. The last 2 nights I've used nothing and slept okay - the usual tossing and turning, but no waking up for 2 - 3 hours at a time feeling wired yet sleepy. I'm still a bit tired in the mornings, so maybe I'll try taking it around 8pm and see what happens. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I can't totally assess if the Lex is really working til I am well-rested.

I'm still having the same type of thoughts, but they don't seem to be as severe. Things aren't quite as graphic and specific as before, and I'm able to concentrate on other things. The pdoc said he hoped the increase in Lexapro and talk therapy would remove these negative thoughts completely. Good luck to you.....I'm trying to take things a day at a time as well.

You're gonna be just fine...the fact that the thoughts are getting less intense is a great sign..that is what happens..they dont go away all at once..they just get less and less intrusive and soon you stop responding to them with fear..then they just go away..

my scary thoughts have subsided for the most part too...which is great..the only thing negative i can say is that i had a panic attack sunday so i was worried that it might snowball into depression again...i guess the plus is that i know what caused it..i was an idiot and went out drinking with my friends on sat. night and the fatigue from that brought on the panic attack..so now i am reminded why they put in big letters DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL on the bottle of medicine :p..

but i am taking care of myself alot better now..i was kind of running myself down lately and not paying attention to my body so the panic attack was kind of a wake up call that i need to take better care of myself..and the lexapro is a great help too so all in all i think im gonna be OK :)..

Hi! No, it's not too early to feel odd before your period! If the Lex is working at other times of the month, it's working. I just think it's not strong enough to overcome really severe PMS (like PMDD, which is my diagnosis)until you've been on it for a while.

My cycles were off the first few months - very light the first one, some women have even missed completely - then really heavy the second one, etc. Each month my pre-symptoms have improved a bit, so be encouraged that you'll probably not have this hard of a time next month!
Hang in there, you'll feel better soon!

Hi!
I feel like I am the queen of the that time of the month post so I'd behappy to answer!.
For me the lexapro did not make much of a difference till about week 5 or 6. It also seems to lose its effect around my time of the month which for me is a PMDD sitiatuon lasting close to 10 days. I am increasing my dose to 15mg to see if I can easier deal with the PMDD.
My depression was brought on by birth control pills so I feel a little homrmonally out of whack.
My first period on lexapro was over a week late and it felt like someone was re-wiring my brain, one second I would be happy then I was crying for no reason. This month was much better but still not where I wanted to be.
Also on lexapro I began light spotting between periods. At this point I just want to get back to me again.
The depersonalization thing happened to me about the first 5 weeks I was on lexapro. I felt very spacey all the time. I remember being in target one day and feeling like I was on an illegal drug or something, everything was just really sureal. I upped my dose today so I am actually feeling a little bit of that again. It does go away so do not worry!
Good luck, feel free to ask any question you can think of here!
Lexy

Hi, Linnie.
The most helpful information I received when I first started on Lexapro, and was having terrible side effects was simply to hang in there, because it does get better.
I've always felt like just about everything we go through on earth is a lesson, and it's important to complete our lessons. It doesn't matter how hard it was, or how much difficulty we had getting through it, the important thing is not to give up.

Try to remember that no matter how bad a particular moment or day may seem, there are better days to come. I can promise you that.
Take care and God Bless.

kellieann7, well im taking the plunge and going to try Lexapro, i have had some of the same personality traits as you growing up and I'm very moody and quick tempored, also had the turney sick stomach as a kid, parents fought alot. Recently in the last 4 tears i lost my dad and my brother, and also have been battling high blood pressure for 10 years, my Doctor thinks that Lexapro could help very much for not only depression but the anxiety state ive been in and out of for years...

ill report back in a few weeks, hope all is well with you..

Mark
