Depo Provera

Posted by tinydancer on March 10, 2004, at 2:31:04

I began taking DP about 7 years ago, on and off. Last year I stopped taking it (summer 2003) and 2 weeks ago got a shot again. My husband claims every time I have gotten the shot I'm deeply depressed and irritable and restless and so on. I've been suicidally depressed and miserable and wondering if it could be the Depo. I take Zoloft now.

It can most definitely be from the Depo. I went into a heavy depression last summer after I had gotten my third shot. I was suicidal, never got out of bed, stopped going to work; it was bad. My doctor took me off of the depo provera because of it. She put me on Zoloft to try to counter it til it wore out of my system but that was not near strong enough. If you are that depressed, the Depo is only going to intensify it. I would not go for your next shot.

Good luck

Colleen

Yes it can definitely be the Depo-I am worse on any type of FAKE progesterone. Provera and loestrin also contain it.It really worsened my menstrual migraines, too. I suggest that you read up on the fake progesterones. Prometrium is micronized natural progesterone but I don't think it has quite the same depressive, moody side effects.

The shot can be a doozey..

She (the shot that is) helped me out a lot at first. I didn't gain any weight or become depressed and with the added bonus of no menstration... What more could a girl ask for? Well, how about depression! Yes, she stung like a needle (pardon the pun). I'm dx Bipolar anyway and the shot didn't help me much. I was on her for 2 years and became depressed about 8 months after I started DP. And I usually don't have a problem with depression from birth control of any sort. But, after getting the shot for 2 years, I was depressed for a period of 2 years as well. Coincidence? I thought so too. Stupid me, eh? After I quit, the depression followed for about 9 months until I moved to a different town and started school again. (Why am I telling you the story of my life, huh?) Anyway, long story short, I doubt that my long-term depression with manias that were only induced by AD's were just caused by BD. I'm certain that little prick in the hip had something to do with it as well. However, I was considering going back on. Thanks for the thread to help refresh my memory! Why not try the patch, or Ortho Tri Cyclen? Ortho didn't cause any problems for me, but I heard the patch causes acne. I do warn you to stay away from demulin 1/50. Too much estrogen is not a good thing.....

Hope that helps, it sure helps me to bad mouth DP,
kk

The best part is that I got it for hubby's sake, and now HE doesn't want to have sex. Good grief. It's been nearly a year or something. I don't really care, because I have issues with sex to begin with...But I'm really annoyed because it had been so many months and it would have probably been completely out of my system given a few more.

I'm definitley finding a new BC method, because this is extremely destructive. I have problems remembering to take my meds so the pill isn't likely to be a good substitute. I might try the patch, though.

Ovcon 35 is a good birth control pill to try. It has the lowest dose of progesterone and it is a different type than in depo-provera. The Nuvaring is a new form of contraception worn "inside" and it has the same type of progesterone as in depo. Well, I tried the Nuvaring and it made me insane. Very depressed, irritable and bloated. My dr. told me it was the progesterone that was causing such side effects. My doctor told me it is very unhealthy to use straight progesterone for birth control. You have to have a balance of estrogen as well. The good form of estrogen is estradiol....good for your brain, heart and bones. REad Dr. Elizabeth Vliet's books "It's My Ovaries, Stupid" and "Screaming to Be Heard".
Good Luck and stay away from Depo-Provera.
