I am new to the board (first post)though a veteran of years of depression.
Like many, I have been through them all and then some. Always looking and hoping.
For the first several years of this journey I was well taken care of by Parnate. Tolerance caused discontinuation.
Now after dozens of failed or partial respone trials I am back to the MAOI's.
Marplan is current drug of choice. Now up to 60 mgs after a little less than two weeks. Other than a bit of confusion the side effects are minimal. Just waiting for it to kick in. Little if any improvement so far.
Knowing it's still too early for great expectations I was hoping for input from others who might be or who have been on Marplan. Like many the days are dark and thus any input would be helpful.
A curious point is that there seemed to be an early respone which though mild has disappeared.
Wishing all well.

I can't tolerate more than 40 mg. Marplan because of dizziness. I didn't get much of a response to it until I augmented with Cytomel (T3 thyroid hormone). I can't say I'm doing wonderfully but I am doing better.
I have a lot of anxiety which the Marplan doesn't seem to address.
I wish more people knew about Marplan because it seems to be free of most of the side effects of either Parnate or Nardil.
I.

Thanks Ilene. It does seem difficult to find information on this drug though much of what I have found is fairly positive. Most of the studies were done in the late 80's and then it seemed to disappear from the radar screen.
If it wouldn't be a bother would you mind telling me how long it took for you to respond or sense that you were getting some benefit from the med. Thanks, Phil

As I said, I didn't feel I was getting much out of Marplan until I added Cytomel. I'm not sure if this means I just need the extra boost from Cytomel for the Marplan to do its job, or if Cytomel + some other AD would work as well.
Marplan, like all the other MAOIs, restricts what other drugs you can take. Plus I miss eating real cheese.
I.

I'm going to try Marplan. It IS available, contrary to popular belief. A very wise psychotherapist recommended I had my only moderately happy years on Nardil. It pooped out and I had trouble with the side effects. Parnate was so-so (though definately better than the SSRIs - what a bust!I'd say if you were helped by Nardil or Parnate, Marplan is definately worth a try.
