Do any of you have the placebo effect when you change meds?
I have a bad habit possibly I'm a little warped (okay maybe alot warped). I really enjoy changing meds.
I have this anticipation of a new med change like a teenage boy awaiting his first date with a kiss.
Each med change brings the idea of "hope and cure".
The first week I think i feel better and am undergoing this placebo effect.
I actually read peoples successes with meds and desire to try it with hopes of the same result. Or, I learn so much about a med that I lead my p-doc into prescribing it. Strattera was a great example of this. I wanted it, I got it, I felt good first week then felt like crap there on.
to refresh any memorys out there I have copied the definition of placebo effect below.
The placebo effect is the measurable, observable, or felt improvement in health not attributable to treatment. This effect is believed by many people to be due to the placebo itself in some mysterious way. A placebo (Latin for “I shall please”) is a medication or treatment believed by the administrator of the treatment to be inert or innocuous. Placebos may be sugar pills or starch pills. Even “fake” surgery and “fake” psychotherapy are considered placebos.

I don't think this would be considered a placebo effect, but the NIMH noticed something a long time ago about the mood states of their patients upon admission into their program. Most new patients experience an observable brightening of their mood and outlook during the first 2 weeks that looks a lot like an improvement in their depression. I think it is the anticipation of a cure that causes this. Most of the time, these patients are fully aware that they are not being given an active drug. This was the case with me. It was a huge relief to think that I was about to be cured.
