I been to my new psychiatrist today. He is willing to rx a MAOI. I am not sure which one to ask him for! Which one has less side effects, Parnate or Nardil?
I won't be getting it before feb 05. I am away for holiday now and after that he will send an application for that. He needs authorization so that the pharmacy can import it, a process of about 2 weeks.
He is great, and for the fisrt time HE REALLY knows what he's talking about!
It took me thought 1 and half hours to find his place despite having two maps and asking like 15 people It was on a tiny little street.
P.S. the latest diet lists are not so restrictive as some has suggested here.
Is it true that Parnate is better tolerated than Nardil?! has less Side effects?!
Has anyone tried Parnate for Social phobia with success?
Thanks.
Ted.

Both are good drugs for social phobia IMO. Parnate has fewer side effects but seems to cause worse insomnia. Nardil seems to cause more hypotension, weight gain, and sexual side effects (particularly, anorgasmia).

Hi Ted,
It's good to hear from you as always :-)
I'm not sure it matters too much whether you take Nardil or Parnate first because you can always swap to the other one if you don't like your first choice!Best Wishes,
Ed.

I am getting one of them on february 2005. I want to have holidays without some slight food restrictions and I need to clarify in the meanwhile if I have ADHD. It took me a while indeed to find a psychiatrist who would rx them. This guy, he really know what he's taking about. He suggested Selegiline at 20 or 30mg a day?! Any ideas?! I know it becomes a irreversible unselective MAOI at high doses, but not sure if it would help my SA.
But he's cool about any mao and it's just until I come back from my holidays.
I already have the selegiline, and can get it easily and cheaply. Should I give it a try?!
Thanks,
So happy that I found this great place!

Hi,
I wouldn't try the selegiline before you've tried the better established Nardil. Anyway, if you do take the high-dose selegiline, you WILL need to observe the food restrictions!
Regards,
Ed.

Ah,consider yourself lucky,if you are a responder too parnate,it should happen rather quickly, and usualy the first few months on it will give you the most roboust relieaf from the med, possably because for the first time in a long time a medication is actualy LIFTING depression,i still rember my first year on the medication.
It is likly however you need to add a second medication esepcialy if you want it to help social anxiety, usualy this will be a benzo.Parnate when it works a lot of times will remove that sick sinking feeling in the gut, give you energy to get up and take on tasks,it can however still leave you staying inside, not so much cause your anxious just because there seems to be this tendacy it increases to want to be alone, and instead work on cleaning or some other projoect, even talk on the net.A semi sedative addiotion is what gives that little nudge that seems to be missing from parnate,if its just right you will go out and do all sorts of thing.
A benzo is usualy a good choice, its very easy to throw a sedative in with parnate and with an incorrect med or dose end up stimulated and high, rambling, thats what u want to avoid.
I personaly feel parnate is missing some small peiace of action to assist in social fears, one that usualy a benzo or beta blocker aids in overcomming,i figured nardil a more gaba agent sensably would have been the anser but that seemd simply to hae a complte different feel,i was more used to parnate.
I hope you get a good respnse from anyone you choose,it would be great to experieance your first true relief right in time for the holidays,Good Luck!

>yes i felt the same way... it did quite a bit.. but it wasnt' until i forced myself to actually live life that i got the most depression relief.. maybe this is an ADD need for stimulation thing? i don't know... but i also think and seem to have experienced (twice?) that clonazepam also has a synergistic anti-depressant property (i believe it hits 5HT-1X receptors)
good luck ;)

I think this is probably generally true. Nardil seems to be extremely notorious for causing orgasm problems, but seems to be less problematic on libido issues.Todd

How frustrating! Libido + anorgasmia = the worst combination.

prematureness would surely be the worstisn't libido + anorgasmia what many women experience (and i'm quite jealous of) ??

Lol I guess it depends on your personal preference. But high libido with no means to 'release' as it were sounds quite frustrating to me :)

The good: Nardil is the best (legal) social phobia med out there, even better than Klonopin b/c you don't get that dysthymic effect that long-term Klonopin is notorious for.The bad: The side effects are horrendous: anorgasmia (often goes away after some time), possible hypertensive crisis, hypotension, etc.
But for the side effects, it would be the best drug out there. But if safety and sexual performance are important to you, klonopin is the way to go with an adjunctive med to offset dysthymia/anhedonia
