Keep a med journal

Posted by Maxime on April 14, 2005, at 13:25:56

Hi.

When I started taking psych meds just over 10 years ago, I never dreamed that I would try between 40-45 different medications (and combinations of the medication).

Just a suggestion to anyone who has already tired several meds or those just starting out. Keep a record of the dosage, the side effects and how long you stayed on the med and anything else you can think of. You may need to hand that information to another PDOC or specialist some day.

That's a great idea Maxine. Since I have just started treatment for my ADHD and finding the first med to be ineffective, I think this suggestion will come in handy.

Thanks!

A great idea. It is so much easier to track these things as you go than to try to recreate records later.

Yes! do I wish I had done that....

If you are lazy like I am -- my grand plans to *THIS* time write down everything every day never pan out-- you can at least make a spreadsheet, list the drug, dates and dosage, and a comment on the overall effect--change in target symptoms, side effects, etc. Also, list the pdoc who prescibed it in case your 14th doctor wants to talk to your 5th....
Obviously more detail is better, but something is better than nothing.

I provided my pdoc such a list, with less detail than I would have liked, but he found it very helpful, and easy to get a quick idea by skimming my spreadsheet....

Believe it or not I have a stack of legal pads for the past 8 years. My husband has made me write down daily how I feel, what i do, the meds I'm on and the times I take them and I even chart the weather. I've used them often to look up various meds and how I felt when I took them. I thought he was crazy when he had me start but now it's habit. It sits on the counter and I date it put day of week, weather, and then the meds times doseages and how I feel and what i do that day. Fondly, Phillipa

The Babbleometer may also give you a helpful perspective on how things are going and a better idea of what helps and what doesn't...
