OCD behavior

Posted by ALD on May 29, 2005, at 0:50:41

For about 2 years now, I've been biting my tongue obsessively when I am agitated, nervous, or even doing something monotonous like reading. I wind up removing the top layer of skin cells on my tongue. It doesn't bleed, but my tongue becomes rough and uneven. The more rough it gets the more I have to do it, to try to "even it out." This is a gross and perplexing habit, and my teeth wind up aching from it. I am on Lexapro 10mg for anxiety, and had hoped that the drug would help with the behavior, but it has not. I really want to break the behavior, but it has proven to be very difficult. Any one have any advice?

When I was a child I went through repetitive behaviors similar to the one you're describing. Since I've been on antidepressants I haven't really had to worry about them, though they do come back on occasion. It might be worth trying another SSRI...Lexapro did nothing for me, though everyone is different.

My husband says to try sucking hard candy or gum. He's not on an AD but was biting the sides of his mouth really bad. Fondly, Phillipa
