Xanax and tolerance

Posted by rjlockhart on March 26, 2006, at 21:16:48

Yes i take 4mg of Alprazolam for panic attacks during the day, for severe. I usally take 1mg x 4 daily.

I wanted to ask, if i where to go down, say to .5mg? or .25mg? what would happen. Also Xanax at night when i take it. I take .5mg - 1mg with Restoril 30mg, Xanax's short half life is about 3-4 hours.

When i take Xanax i feel relief, i feel nothing compared to clonazepam which made me depressed, i feel acutally a mood increase, is this something to do with antidepressant properties?

Does Xanax have antidepressant properties?

Thanks

Matt

In my own experience xanax definitely has antidepressant properties. Amazing actually. It makes me feel...perfectly normal. Not euphoric, not high, just completely normal and relaxed.

In clinical studies it was shown to be about the same effectiveness as tricyclics in mild to moderate depression, but in severe depression amitriptyline was a little better than xanax.

The cool thing with xanax is that it works fast, like from day 1 to week 1, and side effects are so few.

But your question is one that has always haunted me...how long will xanax keep working? Dunno. The clinical trials went 6 weeks. Beyond that...months...years...dunno. I wish I did know. If I could know in advance it would keep working, I would be on it in a heartbeat.

I agree -- if you felt that you are better enough to reduce from 4mg Xanax (which is about 2mg Klonopin and 40mg Valium) to a lower dosage , a modest benzodiazepine dosage, one should reduce only about maybe 10-15% a week especially if they have been on it long term. If "withdrawal" symptoms occur, its too fast, especially for something with a long half life. You could always crosstaper it to Valium and then discontinue, or if your insurance covers it to Xanax XR, though I think that's just a patent money waster, but it may prove effective for people who have taken Xanax for long periods.
