Robbie Williams

Anyone know the skinny on this story?

http://www.myvillage.com/pages/celebs-robbiewilliams.htm

The prescription drugs are some unnamed antidepressants. But surely they're not addictive! (Ho! Ho!). I hope they're not really talking about benzos by mistake.

I saw that in 'The Sun' today. He's taking Seroxat (paroxetine) and used to take Effexor. Probably why he could last so long (three hour sex marathons according to the above newspaper) with those hookers who sold their story.

He told 'The Sun' he's taking sleeping pills, Seroxat, 36 expressos, 60 Silk Cut cigarettes and 20 cans of Red Bull a day.

According to the Sun one of his songs on the latest album 'Rudebox' mocked American prescription drug culture. He said "America is a prescription nation. You can get whatever the f*ck you want";

Good Doctor
-----------

"I've got all these demons
and I can't stop 'em,
To tell you the truth doc,
I might have a problem."

"Robert Williams take
one Adderall with water
in the morning.
As if I'm going to take one
tablet, I'm Keith Moon,
dickhead."

"He said "this one's to
take you up"
He said "this one's to
take you down"
When I take 'em I don't
feel sound."

Ah, bless, our Robbie!

Well, yes, he probably has a point about the American prescription culture.

I was wondering what 'prescription drugs' the media were referring to. I wish they'd used 'antidepressants' - things like this might remove some of the stigma. And give credibility to those trying to withdraw from them. Now, if only we could all check into rehab with our next withdrawal.....

Kind regards

america is a pill country...i was talking with a european friend about it. He was amazed. He's like "I come here, and everyone either has pills hanging out, can get pills from friends, can call a doctor, has a doctor telling them they need to get on pills, is getting off pills, or used to take pills." I thought about it, and it hit me: we are drugged to the gills. I mean, not that the pills are great--Prozac? SEROQUEL? Come on, these pills are boring as h#ll--but they're just so ubiquitous. And here, this kid is doing OK, his culture is doing OK, and they don't have the multi-gazillion dollar RX drug tab we do.
They do, however, have: legalized gay marriage, awesome welfare benefits, legalized drugs, open access to education, a high standard of living...
and then it hit me: drugs are often just a cheap substitute for a better world. Sigh.

The Sun... I guess since they don't have any more Jade Goody "exclusives" to feature they need to get the inside scoop from their very solid "sources".. I mean... prostitutes who hooked up with Robbie Williams.

"Still only 25p! And you get what you pay for!"

There's another story in there today about a guy who says he's 'hooked' on Seroxat which his doctor prescribed for him for stress when he was 18. He says he can't go for longer than two weeks without them before he starts 'shaking inside' and his 'body screams out for more'. Looks like this could build up to a similar campaign that lead to the demise of benzos in the UK of we're not careful.

Do you think? I think its good to have this sort of exposure - at least then people will be more sympathetic to people in SSRI withdrawal mode. I mean, GPs are hardly sympathetic, let alone the general public. Anyway. I doubt SSRI phobia will set in - they're far too convenient for the NHS. If we didn't have SSRIs then what? The NHS would be forced to get more therapists etc, and that really isn't going to happen (unfortunately - I think a range of treatment options is best).

BTW slightly off topic but do you see a herbalist? If so, how do you find it?

Oh well.

Kind regards

Meri

Well seems to me that maybe this guy starts withdrawal and then never passes through it.

Well benzos were (and still are) a very convenient way of dealing with malingerers, yet they were successfully demonised by the press and Esther Rantzen. I just think it's entirely possible the same thing could happen with SSRIs given the widespread publicity Robbie has given them and other journalists could take up the slack. They're already playing up the suicide risk and the fact that Seroxat has been banned from use in under 18s for this reason. I also think many GPs would continue to bend the rules and prescribe them anyway like they do with benzos.

No, I don't see a herbalist. I've considered it though and even considered becoming a herbalist but I don't know where to start. What are they like?

Herbalists are really cool. We have TCM ones and heaps and heaps of naturopath type westen ones. Just fascinating, what pharmacy should be like, the feeling of interest and hope rather than the feeling of a warehouse.

Perhaps something a little less than demonisation, but I agree. It will weaken the demonising of benzos. And who better to do it than our high profile friend Robbie. It doesn't matter why he's famous, rightly or wrongly he'll carry a lot of clout.

It might just lead to the demonising of psych drugs altogether.

Celebrities and their medications. It didn't help matters when Winona was caught with vials of liquid injectable xanax the day she was caught shoplifting. Who on earth ever gets injectable xanax instead of tablets from their doctor anyway? That doesn't seem common, but I remember her doctor was so mad and defensive when it was revealed. And didn't Nicole Richie supposedly take a load of benzos that time she parked her car on the LA freeway? Or maybe it was something else. I wish they didn't do things like this and that media didn't sensationalize the stories so much... so often revealing the prescription meds as a Big Explanaition.

Laima are you sure it was injectable xanax? I know they have injectable ativan. Never heard of xanax. And what did Nicole Richie die of? I heard meth. Love Phillipa ps didn't her son die on two antidepressants and another med?

Phillipa, I swear I heard she used injectable xanax and was carrying it around in her purse. I remember I had xanax tablets, and wondered why she needed injections and how she could maintain consciousness like that. And Nicole Richie didn't die, she just had to explain to police why she parked her car on the freeway and clogged up traffic- not sure if they had a court date yet or not. It was Anna Nicole Smith's son who died-very tragic, that family. Well, you can tell there are far too many celebrity mags at the doctor's office.

I think I heard about that. Wasn't that some Channel 4 documentary a few weeks ago? They're making Paxil/Seroxat out to be some kind of crack cocaine or something. I can't see being hooked on the stuff... all it did for me was make me fat.

One thing I envy about Robbie is that he's rich... if he does have problems with depression and a Paroxetine "addiction", at least he can go to a posh Paxil rehab spa in Arizona or some such. Being rich and depressed is far better than being poor and depressed.

They just ran a story today in 'The Sun' about Liam Galagher saying Robbie is a drama queen for going into rehab for getting off antidepressants. He said if you're 'a rock' like him you just stop taking them alone.

Great! You can always tell a tough guy by the way he puts down others.

One of my friends became famous...seems to me that's an awfully intense experience to suddenly enter so much scrutiny-even for an extrovert.

Well, I am still rather amazed about the extreme behavior of Winona Rider and Nicole Ritchie, but this is sort of a reminder to try not to pass judgement.
