What now? Suggestions...

Posted by SheilaC on July 5, 2007, at 10:12:33

Antipsychotics made me swell up (Abilify, Risperdal) Depakote 250ER made me hot, low-grade fever (I could try 125mg Depakote).

I do ok with Xanax.

Lamictil gave me a terrible reaction (mouth blisters!)

Trileptal and Cymbalta give me awful heartburn and severe acidity.

What should I do?! Very frustrated!

Sheila, what is your diagnosis and your symptoms? What are you currently on? Can't keep track of who has what diagnosis or what they take, lots of posters with lots of conditions, it's impossible to keep anyone straight unless you have dealt with them diretly and then it's even difficult after "listening" and reading so many other posts in between. It's too much for me to follow more than one or two different posts at one time. Part of my illness.

Thanks.

Sorry about that. I am BP II. I am currently trying to find a med or meds that can keep me stable. From what I have found antidepressants make me hypomanic, antipsychotics make me swell up, and I am desperatly searching for a mood stabilizer I can take that won't effect me so severly.

Sorry Sheila,I don't have enough experience with BP2 to advise a med for you. Perhaps others who have that diagnosis will be able to help you out. Good luck...Stargazer

Hm... Have you tried Lithium? That's got a great rep as the most reliable mood stabilizer, and as an augmenting agent for anti-depressants.

Lamictal is out...

Trileptal is out...

Abilify and Risperdal are out...

Have you tried Seroquel? That's got a good reputation as a user-friendly mood stabilizer which also helps sleep...

Trying the lower dose of Depakote might be worth a try...

Verapamil has gotten some good press as a mood stabilizer/anxiolytic for women...

Do you have much trouble with depression? Or is it mostly the hypomania?

Also, are you and your pdoc sure it's hypomania? I've been evaluated more times than I can tell you for BP, because when I respond to an AD, I look surprisingly bubbly. So far, though, all the doctors have concluded that I am unipolar, but that my basic personality is much bouncier than anyone would know under the depression. I wonder if a re-evaluation might find that you don't need a mood stabilizer so much?

But, assuming you are BP II, those above are the things I can think of... I'm not all that knowledgeable about mood stabilizers, and I'm sorry I can't be more help.
