Bipolar I vs. Bipolar II

Posted by twinch on August 11, 2007, at 17:34:04

I am bipolar II, so I think. I have never been told that by my pdoc, but from what I research I seem to fall into the bipolar II category. The symptoms between bipolar I and II are so similar that I cannot figure out which one I have. So I ask these quesitons. Can someone have bipolar I, but without any hallucinations or delusions? Is the euphoria more intense with Bipolar I? Would having violent thoughts and images characterize Bipolar I better than Bipolar II?

Thanks : )

The psychosis and delusions are SOME of the things that differientiate BP I and II.

Why do you think you might be BP I?

It's possible that you are BP I and just haven't had a full blown manic episdode.

But whether you are type 1 or 2, you better get on a mood stabiliser. Once you start cycling, it gets worse with each cycle.

I was on 800 mg of tegretol XR but I was more depressed rather than manic, so I was switched to lamictal. I just started the lamictal (25 mg). I keep having an unusual feeling of mania. I guess it's mania. For 10 minutes or so I get these bursts of energy. A euphoric feeling sets in. Afterwards I get depressed. Could that be considered rapid cycling? I think that I am bipolar I because everytime I am in public I feel like people are looking at me and saying things about me. I don't hear any voices, but I am paranoid. Could that be something different?

Thanks : )

I retract what I said below about one or two drinks as it sounds like you are not stable. Paranoia can be anxiety that is so hight that an aantipsychotic is needed. I really think you should talk to your pdoc makebe get another appointment soon. Love Phillipa

You defiantly need to consider lithium its the one and only when it comes to bipolar I. I am no doctor but it sounds like you have manic depression without a doubt. Lamictal is basically a anti-depression med for people who suffer with manic(Bipolar I)
its used with other meds as well, but its not much of a mood stabilizer..I am on both lithium and lamictal.
