Zolpidem mood after-effects?

Posted by rgb on November 23, 2007, at 8:21:35

I have a hunch that using zolpidem in the evening contributes to my apathic mood on the next day, but I'm not certain at all and it could be something completely different. It's really useful for sleep though :|

Anyone agree, disagree?

This paper possibly agrees:

http://content.apa.org/journals/pha/11/4/259

but it's hard to tell from the abstract what exactly they did. Anyone have the article?

Ambien has a short half life and shouldn't but everyone is different. Good luck Phillipa

Everyone reacts different to sleep aids but they all have in common a potential mood and grogginess effect depending on the person and what else they're taking. I'm fairly habituated to Valium so I can stay up right through 20mg of Ambien. But that's just my concerns.

Sonata I know though is a very weak agent of the three Im-not-a-benzo-but-I-sort-of-ams.

I have odd depressive and wierd afternights with Benadryl.

Hi rgb,

I find that zopiclone, a fairly close relative of zolpidem, has this effect on me. It actually worsens my depression too.

Yes, I have often noticed a distinct next-day dysphoria with ambien, less so w/ lunesta.

Hello!

Phillipa, yxibow:
True, it has a short half-life, but this is actually the reason why I expect it to have after-effects. I don't think the drug effect itself is depressing me - quite the opposite, to be honest it makes me quite happy before going to bed. My guess is that we are experiencing mini-withdrawal the next day.

I suppose that's still better than a longer-acting benzo that doesn't cause dysphoria the next day but causes *real* withdrawals when you stop it (which zolpidem doesn't do for me, presumably because you are already "mini-withdrawed" by the next evening).

sonic_gb, saturn:
Interesting that I'm not the only one.

Everyone: Thanks for the answers :)

Although zolpidem generally has a short duration of action, it caused the worst 'hangover' I have ever had from a sleeping pill. I was sedated all morning and had some memory loss.

I agree with rgb. It has to be something with interdose withdrawal because of the short half lives involved.

For me according to article it would be switching from nights to days as used to it and I felt horrible when working nights the next day and nothing let me sleep during the day. Phillipa
