I'm thinking about going off of Parnate and trying a tricyclic, but they all seem to cause weight gain and I don't want to be fighting my weight on top of everything else. I'm hoping there's one (or more) out there that doesn't cause it.

I lost weight whilst on dothiepin, Imipramine which im on now hasn't caused me any weight gain. I stacked on loads of weight whilst on doxepin. I don't know for sure but i suspect desipramine and possibly nortriptyline won't be much trouble.

hm, probably desipramine, nort may or may not be weight neutral, have you tried bupropion, it might be better for bipolar, though not a substitute for a tca, i'd want to be on a mood stabilizer if you use a tca and are bipolar

Nortriptyline is definitely a weight gainer for me and messed around with my triglycerides. This is one of the reasons I switched from nortriptyline to desipramine.

I've only tried one Tricyclic - amitriptyline. My main problems revolve around anxiety and I guess amitriptyline only helped a little with it. It's supposed to be the gold standard for depression but it didn't really cut much ice with my anxiety - including social phobia.
As regards weight gain, it caused none with me whatsoever. It did, however, cause dry mouth, difficulty in urinating, constipation, excessive sweating, blurred vision...!
Amitriptyline is not stimulating - it induces drowsiness on taking the dose, however, this seemed to wear off with me a after three or four months.Amitriptyline may well be worth considering as it caused no weight gain with me at all, but the anticholigenic side effects (listed above) can be unpleasant!! I've also read that it can put a strain on the heart in long-term therapy.
Good luck!

Yeah, that's the one my pharmacist recommended to me but the side effect profile says weight gain is among the top few.
It's actually what prompted my thread.
