No idea how reliable this is but was surfing and found this on calcium and depression. Probably not scientific but who knows? Yes we sure are all different. Never would have believed this. Phillipa

I get the same exact thing. if i take a calcium supplement i get so tired and sad. i get realyl sluggish and hungover. I mean milk doesnt do anything but the supplements are not good for me.
Same with inisotol, they say its good for depression, yet i get really depressed if i take it. I think people are sensitive to certain vitamins and minerals.

I've read that too much or too little calcium can cause depression. Go figure - how are you suppose to tell.
And the article also states that calcium works against weight loss. I have only heard that it helps it.

Megadoses of calcium exacerbate my depression significantly within an hour of taking them.

Personally, I think Mg also plays a role in this issue. You know; the importance of maintaining the Mg/Ca balance in the proper range.
Thanks for the article, Phillipa!

Ron your're welcome just couldn't get over what both you and Scott reported. I'm wondering if bipolar disorder is a factor? So many searches and nothing. Love Jan

I think they're selling products, Jan...
I wouldn't trust information from a place that doesn't a) have an HONCode, b) isn't a peer reviewed journal of some sort and/or c) is selling something.
But that's me.

Scott, that is kind of cool that you can immediately tell that is not for you. Does that happen with anything else? I forgot your dx. Do you have any anxiety?
I wish there way to know. I only found out that I have one gene (you need 2) that cannot get rid of copper. Only because my uncle had Wilson's disease. My blood level was fine, but my urine was not. So now I take extra Zinc and avoid multi-vitamins because they have copper.

One of my doctors at the NIMH, NIH thought that there was an imbalance between calcium and magnesium in depression.
> Does that happen with anything else?
Yes. P-5-P does it. My reaction to this substance is much worse than that I have to calcium.
> I forgot your dx.
Bipolar depression.
> Do you have any anxiety?
Not so much anymore. CBT helped a great deal with that. I used to be frozen scared in social situations prior.

Gosh. I hope your treatment for that remains effective.

Phillipa, anything can worsen depression.
Anything.
It depends on the person's genes.
It depends on the person's intolerances.
It depends on the person's disease.
It depends on the person's imbalances.
For each person who's depression was worsened by calcium, there is also an equal person who was helped immensely by it.
It's all about balance. Everything in life is about balance, including calcium. And each person is unique in what it is or isn't that helps them feel better, and in what amounts it does so.

Well how can we advise or can docs prescribe? Almost impossible. Need testing. No other way that would be reliable. Phillipa

We are getting closer to being able to test someone's genome to ascertain which drugs will work and which will cause side effects. At the moment, using micro-arrays hold promise.
