Parnate boosted by Desipramine, Nortryptaline, etc

Posted by MRM1666 on June 4, 2011, at 8:52:21

I've read that some people have had Desipramine, or Nortriptyline or Ritalin, etc. added to Parnate.

I've spoken with my psychiatrist about this but he's wary of doing so given the possible consequences. Has anyone, in fact, done this sort of thing? And please let me know what your experience was.

My diagnosis is major depression and my primary symptom is tiredeness.

Thank you again.

Sure!

Parnate + dextroamphetamine = potentiated AD effect of Parnate, was able to get away with a lower dose of Parnate this way. ADD symptoms improved. No effects on blood pressure.

Unfortunately, stimulants (for me) follow the law of diminishing returns over time... including Parnate itself.

Parnate + methylphenidate = OMG anxiety through the roof, increased blood pressure quite a bit.

YMMV

Thank you for your response.

Yes, my psychiatrist told me of the possibility of increased blood pressure, etc. (including death) as a result of being on Parnate and either
Desipramine, Nortryptaline.

I'm wondering if anyone can differentiate the experience of being on Parnate and a TCA from the experience of being on Parnate and a stimulant.

I was not able to convince my pdoc to rx this, or find a new pdoc before the parnate got rid of my depression and i decided i could come off it to focus on treating ADHD.

If slowly titrated, i think the TCA would reduce risk of blood pressure problems (preventing tyramine crisis), though average bp would probably go up. nort would also reduce/prevent risk of 5ht syndrome.

i did use adrafinil with parnate to reduce tiredness.

There have been some clinical trials invovling combination of TCA and MAOI that you might want to show him or her.

Dr Ken Gillman has some info on his site "Psychotropical" about combining parnate witha tricyclic, its somthing he does for resistant depression

Previous poster was right that nortriptyline (or another tricyclic) can actualy help prevent a hypertensive crisis.

The trick is to start both drugs at low doseage (say 10mg of parnate and 25mg of nortriptyline per day) and slowly increase over 2 weeks or so.

Many many patients all over the wold have been treated with this combination, if you have severe, resistant depression, its worth trying.

It should be no problem adding desipramine. In fact it may help offset some of the low blood pressure issues a lot of folks get.
Nortriptyline does some work on serotonin and may be an issue.
for me, desipramine was good for fatigue. It helped with pain as well. It might make you a little anxious though. especially on top of parnate.
Wellbutrin is something else that might be added to parnate for fatigue. But if youre anxious at all that could make it worse.

Thank you for all of your responses.

My psychiatrist is unwilling to risk adding a TCA to the Parnate I'm on. My fatigue is such that I will have to start searching for another psychiatrist.

Thank you again.
