Parnate for blushing and anxiety.

Posted by Ben on July 25, 2011, at 12:07:16

I have a bipolar II disorder and also social phobia. My mood swings are under control with Lithium, Valproate, Lamotrigine. I have started taking Parnate about 4 weeks ago. Now I am on 25mg but I dont feel some relieve of anxiety or blushing. Whats your experience with Parnate. Should I increase the dose with my psydoc?! Anxiety and blushing are those symptoms I have in social area (going with the train, speaking at the post office for example.....).
I have forgot to mention that I also take Abilify as a mood stabilizer but I read that Abilify can make anxious too?!

Seriously I thought blushing was just a reaction of some. I don't know a med for that. Phillipa

So you are taking all 5 of those medications? I know Scott and others might not agree with this, but I think this type of polypharmacy is going to make your recovery harder in the long run. We need to give ourself time to heal and wisely use supplements, diet and exercise-not take 5 medications and hope for a full recovery. I'm sorry, I think we are in a sad sad state of psychiatry.

I think it's a bit ridiculous to add another medication on top of what Ben is already taking for blushing and anxiety. I say get into the gym 5 days a week, adopt a very well balanced paleo-like diet, and see a very good therapis(get into a psychodynamic therapy group is possible). I wonder if some babblers are doing everything possible to combat their enemies.

Well, you're fully entitled to your point of view.

Of course healthy lifestyle comes into it, just as meds do - I always assume people are doing the healthy lifestyle thing as a baseline

Most people are not doing the healthy lifestyle thing. Eating grains isn't healthy, especially wheat. Most do not exercise properly. And many are not aware of supplements that may be helpful in supporting brain function and mood. Lastly, the majority of people are not working hard in therapy, making positive social connections, and getting the right amount of support.

I do not think it is realistic to look for the solution to all our problems in medication. It's definitely not realistic to believe medication alone will help us get anywhere close to full remission.

We just keep piling up the medication looking for the cure to all our ills.

Anxiety and blushing are no fun, but even so I feel meds are a heavy handed response.

I remember my T saying that embarrassment was not something much studied in psychodynamic circles.

But it is an interesting emotion or condition that is hard (for me) to understand.....just what is involved in it, what particular feelings....it always seems to escape me.

Apart from that, Parnate was not much good for me socially.
