You know you're in trouble...

Posted by kagome on March 15, 2012, at 0:25:39

when your *medication* doctor thinks you think about medication too much.

My pdoc is concerned about my anxiety over Parnate (apparently I should be cool as a cucumber that I suddenly have hypertension) and my asking for another medication (Prazasin) after just starting Abilify. Obviously I just want to get better as soon as possible. Regardless, I'm now on med probation with no change in my meds allowed for several weeks. This while I'm still at sub-therapeutic levels of each (20mg Parnate, 2mg Abilify). Luckily the Abilify is helping just enough to keep the suicidal suggestions at a whisper rather than a roar.

That abilify will take a long time to build up in your system, so I would not worry about it yet. Probably the several weeks you are waiting for.

Docs don't like too many changes at once or frequently. I hammered a doc once with almost daily med changes. I would call every day with a request. I think it eventualy got to him, and thats when he would not let me off the abilify, which eventualy was the down fall of me. Anyways hes not my doc anymore. He stoped taking insurance. I've been trying not to do that to my new doc. So far success!

I think most of us are not so much "obsessive" about treatment as we are "intensely focused" on getting well. The problem is really in the potential for *impulsiveness* and *compulsive* self-medication.

Our quality of life depends on successful treatment. When doctors don't get it right the first few times, one can't help but to do some medical research to figure out why.

I won't recommend this to anyone with MDD, but Abilify is a drug than can be initiated using loading doses. I would recommend this for people who are treating mania or schizophrenia, though. The problem with doing this for MDD is that people often do better at 2 mg than they do at 20 mg. Often, with MDD, dosages in excess of 2 - 5 mg produce unacceptable side effects.

I don't call docs anymore. Why they at least mine don't seem to care and my old one used to tell me to do what I thought was best. New one wants no changes. Tried on own didn't work so I know I also obsess it's become a way of life. And one I don't like. Phillipa

What's weird is that I don't even call my pdoc, ever. She insists on weekly meetings, and I'm at a loss as to what I should be talking about that won't get a permanent "medication obsessed" stamp on my file. Anyone heard any good jokes lately?

Very good way on putting this...

Scott, why does Abilify work that way for MDD?
