Hi,
I'm posting this because I've got severe depresion
this afternoon.
I'm going to ask my Pdoc about Minocycline tomorrow, and I'm scared what he is going to say.Slabicki

Have you google just minocycline? I was given it in 75mg for twice a day daily doseage by dermatologist for perioral dermatitis. I didn't continue as had the headache and dizziness. I will post the drug monologue for you. This is so coincidental that I was given by a dermatologist and now find out it's also being trialed in depression. It is the only tetracycline that crosses the blood brain barrier. Do you have any dermatitis as might get a dermatologist to prescribe. Thinking of returning since RX a couple weeks old and dermatitis still present. Phillipa

What could he possibly say about taking an antibiotic proven safe after years of usage? What are you bringing in to him as supportive evidence that minocycline is a reasonable choice for treating depression?
Minocycline *might* work best when combined with a NRI TCA (desipramine or nortriptyline) and/or Lamictal. If I continue to improve the way I am now, I will eventually try to discontinue Abilify. There is a possibility that I will end up needing it, though. I'll post my results when the time comes. I cannot rule out the possibility that minocycline would act as an augmenter of other types of antidepressants. Unfortunately, I cannot provide the article detailing the tests comparing the antidepressant actions of minocycline when combined with desipramine versus fluoxetine.

Hello there,
Thank you both for being there.
I'm still waiting for Pdoc response.
I hope for the best, it's just my anxiety that
makes me worry.
Minocycline is my only choice.

Why is the namebrand not being used but one of the generic names? There are quite a few manufacturers. Scott did you up the dose and if so any headaches, dizziness? Thanks Phillipa

No. I am remaining at 100 mg/day (50 mg b.i.d.) as per doctor's instructions.
The only side effect that minocycline might be producing in me is a loss of libido. However, I cannot discount the possibility that there is some residual loss due to prazosin, which I discontinued last week.

Why would an antibiotic cause this? Unless a person is sick and not feeling well physically. Have you ever being where you live an old tic bite? As neurological changes occurr with lymes. Know first hand about that. And also when on biaxin xl I felt good. When taken off two days later eating a sandwich on a beach and having good time and all of a sudden felt like I'd been dropped out the sky and come down to earth. Wasn't manic just felt okay. Shortly after being off the antibiotic is when I lost my taste and smell. Could the lack of antibiotic caused those spirochettes to attack the neurons in nose as the specialty hospitals said. That a virus took it away. Explains inflammation also. Phillipa

Drugs are not categorically one thing or another. It sometimes helps not to assign them labels. Minocycline isn't so much an antibiotic drug as it is a chemical substance that has antibiotic properties. It also has other properties that are unrelated to those that are antibiotic:

It might be possible to build a molecule similar to minocycline and remove its antibiotic domains while retaining those that produce the effects that are listed in the above post.
