Brintellix Pros and Cons

Posted by Lamdage22 on September 11, 2015, at 4:46:11

A pro would be: No sexual side effects or much less sexual side effects and Effexor may be causing these side effects permanently..

Should i try?

What are the risks?

Pro: Brintellix can improve cognitive function and clear up brain-fog independent of its antidepressant effects.

Con: Brintellix hasn't been out very long. Long-term safety has not yet been established.

I would like to try Brintellix. Unfortunately, I would have to stop taking Parnate and agonize for 3 weeks during the washout period. It would then take another few months to re-establish Parnate should Brintellix not work. It is a difficult decision to make. I don't mind trying Brintellix despite its not having decades of demonstrated safety. I am willing to be among those who try it now rather than later.

There's a lot of info out there about the lack of sexual side effects with Brintellix but I experience similar sexual side effects with Brintellix as I did with Zoloft. Perhaps I'm in a very small minority but with this being a very new drug be careful with assumptions regarding side effect claims this early on since the sample pool is still relatively small.

Also keep in mind that I also take propranolol for essential tremor that may have some impact - however I never had issues with this when I was on propranolol alone. I recognize the combination of a beta blocker plus antidepressant could possibly give me more difficulties in this area than a typical person perhaps. I don't know for sure. I'm also additionally on Topamax for migraine prevention. I have no idea how these different medications may be stacking up and possibly influencing side effects of each drug. So take that for what it's worth.

I am tending to not do it.

I admit i have some trouble currently... my hobbies have been SO positive in my life the last couple of month. Now i am sitting here with tendon inflammation (epicondylitis humeri).

Its no fun.

The "mania" is over.

Brintellix could be a little activating mood wise if one tends to get triggered by AD's. I felt energized, but for me that's been welcome relief to heavy depression with both atypical and melancholic features.

Pros: Relatively fast onset of action; not huge sexual side effects (still some, definitely); no other real side effects (for me, at least, over 7 month period)
Cons: Felt "weak" to me; some numbing/blunting of emotions; didn't get the job done, even at 40mg.

Chris, may I ask what your med regime is now?

Lamdage, I hope it's ok if I interrupt your thread for a minute...please excuse my poor etiquette if not....

I've been on and off it. Experienced no side effects. I felt a pronounced effect on anxiety. I would say there are no risks.

Clearing up of brain fog would be awesome. No sexual side effects would be awesome.
Can it be taken with Effexor though? Effexor has this anti-suicidal effect. And i dont know if i will stay on Brintellix if it doesnt also have a anti-suicidal effect on me.
Just less brain fog without antidepressant activity: I dont know if i would want to take the risk of taking a medication with unknown long term effects.

One thing that makes me a bit uneasy about it...this is taken from Lunbeck's own website,

"... It is also an agonist at 5-HT1A receptors, a partial agonist at 5-HT1B receptors and an antagonist at 5-HT3, 5-HT1D and 5-HT7
receptors. The contribution of each of these activities to Brintellixs antidepressant effect has not been established. It is considered to be the first and only compound with this combination of pharmacodynamic
activity. The clinical relevance of this is unknown. "

Yeah that sounds real confidence inspiring. All those other receptors being targeted with zero evidence and no idea the impact it will have. And that in their own words!.
