My fish oil update --fwiw

Posted by noa on September 7, 2003, at 15:18:39

FWIW--

I had been using Carlson's (liquid) fish oil for about 8 months, but recently, because I was travelling, I switched to a capsule form.

I had preferred the Carlson's for several reasons: it packs an EPA punch stronger than any of the capsules (about 800 mg per teaspoon), no fishy burps, and no animal gelatin capsules.

But not being portable was the nagging problem.

Anyway, after using the capsules for a few weeks of travel, I got used to them--yep, fishy burps and all. I decided not to go back to the liquid because the capsules are more convenient for taking mid-day, and I've gotten used to them. The fishy burps seem to depend on what foods I took the capsules with--I haven't paid attention to which foods, but I have noticed that sometimes I get the fishy burps and sometimes I don't, so I am guessing it is related to the foods.

And, yes, I have to take a lot of capsules to get the desired amount of EPA per day--I have been taking about 12 per day for a total of about 3700 mg of EPA per day. I was probably getting more via the Carlsons, but I don't know because I wasn't really measuring it--just swiggin from the bottle. But the amount I'm taking seems to be good for me right now.

As for the gelatin capsules, I WISH they were not animal based, but I've decided I can deal with it.

Hi, Noa, good to see you. I hope your travels have included some fun!

I have a question about EPA vs DHA in fish oil. I *thought* I did research on this issue a while back (well, I know I did the research...just somehow evidently reached to wrong conclusion). I thought it was the DHA that helped with depression, and I have a huge bottle of Carlson's Super DHA now, and then a while ago found out that it is apparently the EPA that helps with depression.

Is that your understanding also? After I bought the DHA I read somewhere that it can even increase depression, except that it seems to help bipolar dx's.

Any comments?

Shar

I have a comment, I think you should only research once. Was that useful Shar? Oh, what? not really you said..
Well that was the conclusion I came to yesterday, when I "learned" about G.A.B.A.
I'm not serious of course, but I do feel like I'm chasing my tail so often when I keep reading about things..Round and around..

I researched Epa in fish and found that farmed salmon was as good as ocean salmon. I laid in a five week supply. A day later, continuing my research, I read that you have to find out what the fish are fed (try doing that through your local supermarket) because some farm the salmon feeding them algae and other fish while others feed them grain which lowers the Epa. How much it's lowered, I don't know.
