Back to Question - Fish Oils, yet, again

Posted by KellyD on September 8, 2003, at 20:51:55

Those of you using fish oils for some time - what have you experienced? If an uplift in mood was found, how long did this take to occur?
Input appreciated.

Kelly, it took until the third or fourth day for me to feel the effect. I tried it three different times. I took a lot less than everyone here, just two capsules usually in the afternoon with some yogurt. I felt an energy boost about a half hour after taking it. When I took three capsules, I felt my heart beat.

The fish oil broke me out badly with acne. I'm using fish now. It's only been a couple of weeks. I don't get an energy boost or see any difference, yet.

Thanks ,Kacy

I have a difficult time with suppliments. I don't know what it is, but I always seem to have some problem with most of the things I've tried. With fish oils being all the rage, I didn't know if it was worth it. Larry Hoover gave me some good info before, as he always does.
I wish I was more tolerant. I'm beginning to think I'm doing it to myself. People can take cupfuls of pills throughout the day and do fine. Me, it's the headache, stomach distress, achiness, any number of complaints.
Again, Thank you for responding.

I completely identify with you, Kelly.

I tried taking a "Once Daily High Energy Multi-vita-min" supplement with a complementary four times a day "Mega Multi Mineral Full Range Amino Acid Chelate" supplement. I dreaded taking both them. Even with food, they upset the crap out of my stomach and the levels in them weren't even mega-doses. I rarely got more than one or two of the minerals down. This is why I have never managed to take supplements. Making it all worse, the all-in-one pills are large and I don't swallow pills easily. Eventually, I throw all the nearly-full bottles away.

I started again with a series of individual pills, and am adding more as I figure out which basics seem most important for me. After seeing how much people here recommend taking, I'm a little anxious about not taking high enough doses and about not taking enough different ones.

For now, though, the bottom line is I can take them without my stomach being upset so I am getting them down everyday. One of them does upset my stomach a little on occasion, although I don't know which one. Some of them are high per the RDA but they are a fraction of what others recommend in posts here; some of them are a lot higher than the amount of that particular vitamin or mineral in the all-in-one pills. Still, I can take the ones recommended on an empty stomach and not have a problem. I am now four weeks into taking some of them regularly and a couple weeks into the others. That's a record.

My current hypothesis about them is based on some comments here about my fish oil sensitivity being something I could overcome if I take a tiny amount and work up to a normal amount over a long period of time–even years. So…maybe if I take some vitamins regularly, I can build up to taking those pills that would give me all of them.

Maybe you should pick out a few you need the most and start with those. You might have the same experience I'm having.

Hi girls,
Just remember a lot of those amounts quoted a "male" amounts not "female" amounts.
Tyrosine 2000mg is a male amount, 500mg is a female amount. I can't take the tablet, I have to take a powdered capsule or the powder or I don't absorb it..and get no effect, except yuk feeling in stomach! I actually get mine from Thorne Research in the US.
The vitamins etc., I can't take a lot due to the fillers and if you take too many together they interact and stop you absorbing them properly...like iron and calcium can't be taken together, and zinc will interfere with iron......so its best just to work out what you really need and what is needed to be taken with it to max absorption and then take one multi as well. Oh and some interact with meds as well.
When I need large amounts, say of magnesium or calcium , I try to buy powders and mix myself..but that's hard to find.
I think it's better in the US as you have a lot more choice. I'm forced to import(err smuggle?) some from the US as they are not approved here.
So far I've got them in as I only order small amounts at a time, but at $50 postage each time...
These are important to me..like methylcobalamin.
Also all vitamins/supplements aren't the same..some are really just junk and don't contain what they say on the label.

Thanks for the advice, Tealady. I guess I better stop taking my iron with yogurt. I've done that more often than not. Would the 5% rda of calcium in my folic acid mix be enough to interfere with iron? If I have to remember a thrice daily schedule, I'm not likely to get the third ones down. I forget the second sometimes.

And, I see conflicting advice on iron: 'with meals' and 'on an empty stomach'.

I don't think folic acid is iron..iron is ferric something Or Fe, so that should be OK..if that is what you are asking?

Iron is best taken with VitC, and just after a meal that has some in it..like meat
Iron taken on an empty stomach can really cause problems wih digestion especially if a large dose

3 times a day is usually ..on waking before brekkie (or with breakfast if not taken on an empty stomach)..lunch/afternoon ..and at bedtime. You get into the "on waking" and "bedtime habit" after a while. Some people put them by their bed.
I only remember my afternoon dose as I start falling asleep..then think why can't I stay awake...ah haa
