I've asked my pharmacist SAM-E but it came out that is not OCT where I live (Italy). He sold me instead of it acetil cystein saying that is "quite the same thing". Does anybody know if also acetil cystein is supposed to have antidepressant properties ? Thanks

It is nothing like the same thing. N-acetyl-cysteine is useful as an antioxidant support, and is the main treatment for liver poisoning as by acetominophen (paracetemol). Saying it is a substitute for SAMe is just plain false.
If you can get betaine (trimethylglycine), then you might consider that as a substitute for SAMe, but it is not equivalent to SAMe.

Thanks Lar. Clear as ever. I suspect that even my pharmacist knew what you know about it. But the price of acetil-cystein should have procured him a blank mind episode ;-)
