Stop the ride, I wanna get off! Maniaaaaaa

Posted by Greta on January 3, 2004, at 10:10:56

Don't know where to start. Very manic since August and have been in control enough that I have accomplished much (re-raftered/sheethed/shingled roof, gutted/wired/insulated/wallboard/painted a 1/3 of house plus totally new kitchen cabinets and floors throughout house) Son in legal trouble since September. Much stress. Work as manager 13 hour nights for 16 years. Artist. diagnosed in '86.
HATE meds/won't stay on. Hospitalized in spring '02 for only 3 days (convinced them I was ok-those places are LOCKED!)
So, basically, I'm highly functioning, but am heading over the edge. Any natural-something that works fairly quickly that I can try before this gets too out of control?
Don't currently have pdoc, so would have to go to emergency psych ward to get meds- which I know I wouldn't stay on.
Will research any and all-just need a place to start.
Hate even writing this, most of the time I am convinced that I'm not bp.
Thanks for your time!

Try time release vitamin C - 1gram, and magnesium,

300-400mg in devided doses. Vitamin C and magnesium are probably the best established
alternatives for bipolar

Greta- I used to have intense manias that would last for a few months at a time. I can only share what has worked for me...of course it may not work for you.

I take 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids, 3 caps. of magnesium taurate, 3 grams of C, 800 IU of E, B-100 complex, multi-vitamin, probiotic (primal defense), 3 caps. of magnesium-chromium-b6 (min-plex from trace nutrients)per day. It costs me about $50 per month. I don't eat diary or wheat based products, almost no alcohol, almost no caffeine, lots of fresh and whole vegetables and fruits, some fish, chicken and red meat. I exercise a lot. I also meditate.

I haven't had mania or depression for over 2 years. I used to cycle (without fail) twice per year for 30 years.

See a naturopath, or orthomolecular doctor, or integrative practioner, i.e. anyone who may be able to shed some light about alternative ways to heal what ails you.

Good luck. I hope you find your way through the mania.

EFA'S have worked for me in the past... if I ever try a low fat diet, I'm totally nuts. I actually have my horse on a higher fat diet and he went from being a "banana boat" to a calm, relaxed horse.
I like the fact that yours is very reasonable- cost wise.
One of my problems is staying on what works. You know, the usual- I'm not REALLY ill. wonder when it will sink in that this is an issue for me?
I walk every day, and used to meditate w/hemi-sync cd's. Definitely helped.
I guess I just needed the support to get back on track.
Thank you. (feeling a little foolish)
