L-arginine -- any experiences?

Posted by psychlover on January 5, 2004, at 5:40:50

Hi, folks.

I just read somewhere that L-arginine is supposed to be a good supplement for a variety of purposes, with few side effects or interactions. It's supposed to help create nitric oxide in the body, whatever that means. Has anyone had any good (or bad) experiences using this? How did it help?

Thanks.

Just to give you a huge hint, Viagra works by increasing the amount of nitric oxide produced by nitric oxide synthase (the enzyme) from arginine (the substrate). You will increase the activity of the enzyme if you supply more of the substrate.

I have no experience with the substance. (They were sold out when I went to buy some.)

I would not expect the response to be nearly as powerful as Viagra, but it would be a nudge in the right direction.

Interesting. I wonder how this stuff would work in combination with Viagra. I wonder if it would be dangerous.

1. toooo much nitric oxide (a known poison freely emitted by macrophage white blood cells onto invading microbes) can cause toxic shock. Toxic shock is the perfectly healthy body overdosing the "invaders" to save itself. By overdosing, the body poisons itself while trying to save itself. This is also the cause of most viagra related deaths (yes, there have been deaths).

2. Durk Pearson recommended 300 mg in his book "Life Extensions". I found that much L-argenine to cause a dull pain in the very center of my skull, implying that such a dose was masaging the ever-important pituitary as he predicted.

After a couple of months (in 1982), I stopped the dosing because I was no longer convinced that I was better off. I wasn't sure that what was happening to me was actually good (or bad).

You bring up the information that L-argenine promotes production of nitric oxide and I am wondering if it wouldn't mostly be effective in consort with Vit-C in fighting cancer.

I personally don't trust 300mg/day. But, maybe 100mg twice daily would work out. I'll have to go back to the lab (my body) and find out..... if can find any on the shelf.

1982? Wow, you have a good memory! ;-)

Also, while too much NO might be a problem for the body, I don't think too much L-arginine would have the same effect. The limited research I have done on L-arginine seems to say it is pretty safe.

Try searching for it on www.pdrhealth.com.

All the best!

I am reporting that Durk Pearson and his computers at his Nuclear Physics Lab, pointed to 300 mg being an upper limit dose. I proved it sufficiently for myself. I'm not reporting what might be good. I am saying that I got a dull pain at 300mg. That's always been a [BIG RED FLAG] for me to back off the dosing.

I will try 100mg twice daily instead. I am the only thing that has changed in this dosing picture in the last 22 years.

Of course, now at my age, my darned pituitary is probably being squeezed lifeless by my skull contracting with age. So I probably won't get dull pains from my dead pituitary at any dose!.......lol
