Supplements for ongoing high stress time?

Posted by HelenInCalif on March 24, 2004, at 2:53:38

In the past I've posted in Dr-Bob's about ADHD, but today I have a question about stress. A close family member is extremely ill in the hospital-- their chances of making it are maybe 30%. Understandably this is causing extreme stress to my family and myself. I'm just feeling the stress chemicals flood my body (epinephrine and cortisol both, I imagine- I feel simultaneously powerless and wanting to fight something).

What helps with high and ongoing levels of stress? I am able to sleep, but wake up in a flood of fear the instant I remember whats going on. I'm already taking multivitamins, fish oil, tyrosine (and extra vitamin B ? that goes with tyrosine) and lecithin. Any advise or pointers to good threads here are appreciated (I tried some searches but got too many results, and I'm not good at reading right now- stress seems to take away brain function).

Hi again

So sorry to hear about your trouble.

I found the following to be helpful: calcium 600 mg, magnesium 300 mg, a high content B complex, and various calming herbs like valerian root, kava kava, passionflower, hops, and others.

I hope that things turn out well, but whatever is going on try to be very gentle with yourself. Best wishes to you and yours.

Helen,

I wish you and your family well and hope that your family member recovers (remember, odds are just statistics ... they don't necessarily have any bearing on an individual's survival).

My personal recommendation is to go homeopathic. If you can, see a homeopath. If you can't do that then try Calms Forte (or just Calms, I think they are the same thing). They have helped me in the past. Also, cut out all caffeine. Caffeine can cause panic attacks even when there is nothing stressing you!

Most importantly, treat yourself well. If you are a spiritual person, spend some time in the hospital chapel, not necessarily praying if that is not your bent, but utilize it as a quite meditation place. That helped me a lot.

I've heard alot of people are having great success with gotu kola for stress and anxiety. You might want to give it a try and it's relatively inexpensive.
