Larry - au secours svp

Larry,

Sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if you know where in Canada I can order some DMAE? I had ordered some DMAE, along with a number of other supplements, from iherb. Well, I just got a call from Border Services, and Health Canada has refused to let the DMAE be delivered. I knew that Canada would not allow Acetyl L-Carnitine into the country, but I don't recall seeing anything about DMAE. Health Canada, apparently, is saying that it's a prescription supplement. As far as I know, it used to be prescription, but not anymore. Geez, I am so teed off. What is it with Health Canada? Do they have an aversion to Canadians getting healthy, both physically and mentally? Sorry, I had to let off steam. I apologize.

Anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Larry.

Tamara

Thats a really, good point.

I've got a question for you. I have seen SAMe for sale in a few stores around here. I was wondering if it was now legal over here in canada (or are these stores selling it illegally)??

It's being sold in Canada legally. I have bought Sam-e at a couple of health food stores in the province I live in. However, I don't think we have as much selection in terms of brands as one would have access to in the US. Similarily, it is my understanding that Melatonin is also now sold legally over the counter in Canada.

I have tried SAMe in the past for depression.

It was far better than any other treatment I tried. I could not afford to pay for it, so I had to stop taking it.

I wish it was a prescription then I could have some of it payed for.

I haven't tried Sam-e yet, but I was really looking forward to trying DMAE. It is supposed to be very good for depression related apathy and lack of motivation; ADD; ADHD; concentration; memory; learning capacity (the list goes on and on). I have read accounts of other peoples' experiences with it on Pyschobabble, and many were positive. One person named Loops had been using it for three months, and reported positive results even after that length of time. I hope I can get some. The other supplement I want to try is NADH Enada. I have ordered some, and, thankfully, Health Canada has not stopped that shipment at the border.

Hmmmm. I have never seen any in of the health food stores that I go to in Ottawa. I think I will call around. There is a really good natural pharmacy downtown, so perhaps they will have it. Have you tried it?

I can't find any evidence that it's a prescription supplement, or regulated in any special way. The only thing that comes to mind is that the label on the particular product you ordered made a health claim, such as "for the treatment of cognitive dysfunction". That, under new guidelines, makes it a drug, unless a specific health claim identifier has been authorized by Health Canada.

I believe that the notification you received would also have an appeal form, or process described, or a contact phone number? It might be worth trying to get around the front line worker's decision. It could be some dude who just finished a training course, ya know?

Bureaucracy, plain and simple. A simple idea, implemented by government, becomes an immense undertaking, understood by no one.

I really don't know what else to say. Health Canada's drug search page is not available just now. Or not for the period of time I tried to link to it.

Thanks Larry. I have tried to access Schedule F of the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations, but it comes up blank. I will try again later. Unfortunately, there is no phone number on the sheet I got with the rest of my shipment. Just the name of the inspector. I will call the general number for Health Canada and see if I can get a phone number so that I can call for an explanation. What's so weird is that there is a Canadian on-line supplement store (NaturaPlus) which sells DMAE. Unfortunately they didn't have any in stock at this time, which is why I ordered from iherb. Oh well. Live and learn. Thanks again, and sorry for the rant.

Yahoo! I have found a source in Canada where I can get DMAE and possibly Acetyl L-Carnitine. I am so happy, and can't wait to try it.
