I haven't taken 5HTP, but the research I've done has convinced me that pharmaceutical grade L-Tryptophan is superior. You can purchase it and get more information from www.healthrecovery.com. I take this product and it has helped my depression and anxiety tremendously. I can not say whether you should stop your AD or not. You have to decide that.

Hi MBK (hope I got your screen name right)

Thank you *so much* for the link that you provided. I must admit that I'm not wild about othomolecular medicine, however the info at this site is great regaring 5HTP and tryptophan. My companion takes 5HTP and Lexapro. I will pass this info to him and his psychiatrist.

I'm was wondering if you knew about this. The natural food stores around here don't sell tryptophane (it seems that they still understand that it's not legal). Reading the site I'm a bit confused. Is all tryptophane legal in the US or only pharmaceutical grade? Any info or links?

Thanx.

The legality issue is confusing, isn't it? As I understand it, it still cannot be sold "over the counter," but it IS legal to purchase it from a supplier that can guarantee its purity. The law is quoted at www.healthrecovery.com, so you can read that for yourself. Find the "individual product" L-Tryptophan and then read all the information. I do purchase mine online and pay with a credit card. It comes in just a few days. It makes a tremendously positive difference in the way I feel. The cost at this site is less than at some others I've seen. Though many people take 2-3 grams, I find 500 mg great for now and will increase if I feel I need to. I just happen to have the types of problems that Tryptophan most benefits - mild depression, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping.

What many people do is take veterinary Tryptophan. It is safe to do that.

Also on www.healthrecovery.com, they explain why L-Tryptophan is better than 5HTP. With 5HTP, you are likely to have a lot of serotonin circulating in your blood, but not in your brain where you need it.

I found a nice article about Tryptophan on the Wikipedia site. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I don't have much to say besides that I feel like I have no emotional anxiety when I use 5-HTP, at around 400 mg / day. All my worries slip away. I think this might lead to a lot less fear of having a panic attack. Theoretically, low serotonin, high blood lactate and high blood CO2 are all "risk factors", so to speak, for a panic attack, and you would be eliminating one of these factors by increasing seroronin via 5-HTP. I can't say how well it works since I don't have panic attacks. But of course, don't combine with an SSRI, lest you risk serotonin syndrome. I have a feeling that SSRI's would be more effective than 5-HTP for panic, but that's not based on much besides a feeling.
