5-HTP and Wellbutrin??

Posted by DumbFox on April 18, 2005, at 7:46:20

Does anyone know if 5-HTP can be taken with Wellbutrin XL? I know that 5-HTP is not supposed to be taken with SSRI's because of the possibility of serotonin syndrome, but seeing as how Wellbutrin doesn't work on the serotonin is it safe?

Thanks!

Larry will no better than me but since Wellbutrin hits norepiphrine and dopamine, and 5ht hits seratonin, I don't know why not.

It should be safe, so long as you match the doses, based on your individual response. The rule is "Start low, and go slow."

That's start at the lowest possible dose, and increase gradually, with lots of time between increases (to watch for effects that might take time to appear). I'd go for a three week interval on the increases.

5-HTP makes some people sleepy, so night-time dose might be the way to go.

i routinely take 5-htp with my ssri and have not had any problems - in fact, there are several studies which say you should do exactly that!

ive seen two studies that show there is no increased risk of serotonin syndrome taking up to 2-4 grams of tryptophan (or the equivalent amount of 5-htp) along with an ssri and, in fact, taking such may greatly enhance the efficacy of the ssri.
