Which Is Better? DLPA or l-phenylalanine

Posted by TomG on May 4, 2005, at 20:21:57

I'm interested to see if people have found one to be superior to the other.

DLPA for me because of PEA from the D form and some possible inhibition of whatever it is that breaks down endorphins and is it encephalins, also from the D form.

Do you take the DLPA by itself or do you take it to augment something else?

I will more than likely be augmenting it with Selegiline if I use it.

You might as well buy the racemic (DL) form, as the dextro isomer, if it does anything at all, could only help. Everyone says that it slows the breakdown of endorphins, but I'd like to see some hard evidence of that effect in man, or even in vitro with human tissue. The fact is that endorphins are broken down by a whole slew of peptidases, and not one or two enzymes like many neurotransmitters. Anyone have any good information on this?

I think DLPA is the preferred form. I do remember seeing a clinical study where they used it to treat ADD. It was significantly effective in that study, but all the good effects were lost at 3 months. Regardless of which form you use or how well it works, tolerance may set in.

The data are old, and studies not well-conducted, under modern standards. Where effects were shown, they were not hugely convincing. It looks like some people have a great response, but most people have little to no response.

Animal studies focussed on carboxypeptidase A, but as you say, there are multiple pathways/enzymes to consider.

Interestingly, naloxone abolished the effect in one study.

Same folks did a different study, soon after:

Whatever the mechanism might be, a lot of folks report subjective improvement from DLPA.

Okay, so I went out and bought some DLPA. Then I read that it can exacerbate anxiety. (NE effects, presumably). I'm depressed and planning to treat this with supplements instead of the Celexa, etc. I've been on. But anxiety/fear is my big issue right now. Nortriptyline seemed to make it worse. So now I'm worried to try the DLPA. Thoughts?
