OXFORD, UNITED KINGDOM. Animal studies have shown that an increase in fat intake can decrease the number of natural killer (NK) cells found in the blood and spleen. NK cells are an integral part of the natural immune response to virus infections and certain types of cancer. Researchers at Oxford University now report that FISH OIL significantly decreases NK cell activity in healthy human subjects.

Now, knowing that depressed/anxious people have in general a "weaker" immune system to begin with, is it not counterproductive to supplement ourselves with Fish Oil? Is it not the trade-off too high?My mood is sensibly better when i take Fish Oil. However i can confirm you that i'm a lot more susceptible to get a cold (or any bacterial infections) during the winter. Moreover my seasonal allergies are far worse with Fish Oil.
Am i on something here? Comments?

I was under the impression that the immune system was overactive in depression.

I think it has to do with elevation of certain interleukens. I am confused too.

> http://biopsychiatry.com/immunesystem/index.htmlIndeed, a very good link. I think, an others may also correct me, that the "stimulators" of the immune system are overactive, but the immune system itself is depressed. An important nuance.
Yes i admit, i have begun SJW last week in addition of my medication. I feel more healthy and less apathic. The changement is subtle but real and constant. I just hope this is not a placebo effect :-/

""http://www.sdearthtimes.com/et1197/et1197s6.html"""St. John's Wort is a specific herb for depression and mental burnout. It also helps raise immune response, which can be lowered by stress or depression. [...] St. John's Wort may also act on the cortical system by inhibiting the cytokine interleukin-6 and other cyto-kines excreted by cells of the immune system. Cytokines affect the nervous system both directly and indirectly."
Keep my fingers crossed

Has anyone here ever found SJW useful for moderate to severe anxiety, like ocd,or social anxiety,or are meds the only ones that will work.I've always had mild depression with alot of anxiety and found SJW useful for the depression but not the anxiety.

Be sure you know the symptoms of serotonin syndrome. That snuck up on me slowly when I combined zoloft and SJW.

I thought SJW was OK but I got the sunburn effect. Now if I could get some hyperforin, is it, that's thought to be the active thing in it. Maybe the hypericin gives you the sunburn reaction. Better for anxiety than depression, for me.

I would argue about the normality of the "normal" people in that reference you opened with. "Normal" people today get 60 times the omega-6 fatty acids that they've evolved to consume. Who is to say that those subjects in the fish oil study weren't having their immune response *restored* to normal by the fish oil?
With respect to your response to allergens, make sure you're getting enough vitamin B3, in the form of niacinamide. And zinc and magnesium. Enada NADH really controlled my inhalant allergies during pollen season, two years ago. NADH is a derivative of niacinamide.
Best,
