Any Fish Oil Experiences?

Posted by Tom Twilight on August 17, 2005, at 15:13:14

Has anyone been helped by fish oil supplements?

I know a lot of people here take them, such as Ed

Is it true that EPA is better for mental health than DHA?

I know this should be on the alternative board but there's more traffic on this board

Plus refined EPA is being developed as a drug, I think

EPA seems to have more acute antidepressant properties, but DHA is still crutial for proper nerve function.

Overall, I would say that fish oil has helped me more than anythings else. I've been on many different meds, but fish oil has been a mainstay.

I think the longer one takes it the better off they are.

It seems to help apathy, and suicidiality. It also seems to offer a small buffer against the piercing nature of anxiety.

I tried fish oil a number of years ago. I experienced an acute improvement that was not sustained, despite continued use. There is certainly something therapeutic in the substance. I just wish it were subject to more rigorous scientific investigation to help define the boundaries of its utility.

Hi Tom,

I take 5g a day. I think it improves my mood. I haven't had any side effects.

Hello Tom,

I take fish oil and find it mildly helpful. I guess i've been taking it for about 3 months now. Its effects are mild but there is certainly a postive difference.

Kind regards

Nick

Ps I take sevenseas brand ~ 'not' capsules but in the liquid form. This way you get a very high amount of omega 3. I think I worked it out that by taking the capsules i'd need to take around 15 of them to get the same amount of omega 3 as I do with a desert spoon of the liquid oil. Plus its lot cheaper. Down side is of course is the taste. (thats sevenseas 'high strength' capsules vs sevenseas 'high strength' liquid - im unsure of any of the other brand equivalents..caps vs liq etc.)

Variable - I've mainly taken the caps - four different brands so far.

I've also taken cod liver oil as a liquid.

Kind regards

I mix a teaspoon or two of fish oil with a glass of spicy tomato juice. Sometimes I add a little fresh lime juice. Once the fish oil is mixed into the tomato juice I can't taste it at all. Taking fish oil this way has the advantage that you don't get fish burps a couple of hours later. Also, it is cheaper, even with the cost of the tomato juice included!

I bought some enteric coated capsules, NOW brand, once and found them quite burp free. Not that I'm usually bothered by fish burps. (I try to take them with highest fat meal.)

I haven't decided one way or another really. But, given what we know about the brain, how it works and how it requires essential fatty acids, I will take fish oil regardless.

I've tried high DHA and thought perhaps it had a detrimental effect. So then I tried high EPA and thought that that too had a detrimental effect to my mood. What to do, what to do?? ;)

I think it's complicated by not only EPA/DHA ratio, but the amount. One gram seems to be the minimum, but some studies have been of much more than that. One study, otoh, showed greater efficacy with less rather than more.

I just keep experimenting in the hopes that one day I will stumble on what's best for me.

Everyone's confused about the EPA/DHA stuff??

Just wondering....has anyone experimented with different ratios and had noticeable differences? If you had a higher DHA would you have more of an anti-anxiety effect?
