Does 5-htp bypass tryptophan hydroxylase ?

Posted by linkadge on October 29, 2005, at 16:15:59

I've been reading a number of studies on depression possably being linked to bad a tryptophan hydroxylase gene.

Can somebody explain to me what is bypassed by taking 5-htp over tryptophan? Is tryptohpan hydroxylase needed after 5-htp ?

5-HTP is the product of tryptophan hydroxylase. Ergo, if one is deficient in that enzyme, 5-HTP is the stuff to take.

The only problem is, the next step is much less specific and unique. 5-HTP is converted to serotonin by decarboxylase, and those enzymes are ubiquitous.

The way the healthy body ensures that serotonin is only produced where it is needed is by localizing tryptophan hydroxylase. Oral 5-HTP tends to promote serotonin formation wherever the blood happens to take it.

If only they actually knew what was wrong with the depressed brain. The serotonin transporter has been studied for a while, but the genetic testing is all coming out negative.

Infact the most depressed people seem to have the short-short varient of the transporter gene, which actually codes for a slower reuptake of serotoin, than in their non-depressed counterparts.

What are you taking these days? (If you don't mind me asking)

Sorry, if you were talking to me. Nothing, from a mood perspective. I'm caught up in pain treatment, and I'm doing multiple med trials there. I've stopped everything else to avoid confounds.
