Licorice MAOI?

Posted by aeon on November 19, 2006, at 18:52:20

I have seen some reports of licorice being an MAOI? Has anyone tried it? It also is anti-inflammatory. Reported effects on aldosterone and cortisol seem to happen only in huge doses, so only a theoretical problem.

I am trying some will keep you posted.

Wow I might keep using this... seems to have stabilised my blood pressure nicely, and given me a nice stimulant like kick. I think it's defintely interacting well with parnate.

I took 6 grams infused in hot water and milk.

Licorice causes bad and immediate depression with me, most likely due to it's cortisol increasing characteristics. I'd be wary of anyone taking this if they already have high cortisol levels.

OTOH, people with sluggish adrenals and low cortisol levels will most likely be helped. If it works I'd say keep using it. :)

Interesting to note, when I take licorice I open the cap and put some under my tongue. I love the taste and notice an immediate change in the way I feel. It also inhibits the 11 beta HSD2 enzyme which converts cortisol to cortisone thus keeping one's cortisol around much longer.

From my understanding 6 grams was a fairly high dose.

Here is a good guide for using licorice (you may have read if you're mixing with milk)

Have you read the Capt. David Williams article yet? He has some really good info concerning licorice, nitric oxide and such:
