Niacinamide (sustained release) for social anxiety

Posted by Quintal on November 25, 2006, at 22:42:09

I've ordered some niacinamide 1000mg sustained release capsules after reading good reports on its effect on anxiety. Has anyone else tried this and can anyone explain how it works? I've read some reports of potential liver damage, anyone know if this is a serious concern?

Niacinamide works best in conjuction with GABA and Inositol. If you want to work out the amounts to combine or take a formula based on the above then try Country Life GABA Relaxer ot Twinlabs GABA Plus.

I have 550mg Nicinamide which isn't sustained release. I wouldn't take more than 1000mg a day and see how you get on with it. Sustained release formulas in my experience sometimes seem to elicit different effects to the non sustained release formulas.

If you are worried about your liver then Milk Thistle is one of the best liver protective supplements that exists. NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) is also excellent, bare in mind though they might alter your response to the Niacinamide. Everyone is different at the end of the day.

The effects of Niacinamide for me are sometimes it will slightly calm me down and other times it will leave me groggy and more anxious the next day. I've repeated the dose many times and found this to be the case. Country Life GABA relaxer on the other hand works better than Niacinamide alone for me.

I have abandoned the use of GABA, Niacinamide and Inositol as they really are too subtle for me to bother with. They really don't have enough of an effect for me to consider them anymore. As I say everyone is different and don't let my experience put you off.

L-Theanine and Taurine are worth trying as well. None of the things mentioned will give an benzo like hit. If your anxiety is that bad then these supplements won't deal with it in the short term like a benzo.

If you want a faster acting 'solution' to anxiety then a combination of herbs I always find is more effective. Dr Stuart's Valerian Plus tea works for me, it's not something you can take everyday though as you get tolerant to it.

Drugs and supplements can help to quell anxiety, but coping techniques in my opinion are essential. The two main areas are correct breathing and cognitive behaviour therapy.

I totaly agree with nolvas, chemicals or herbs may help you cope, but psychological theraphy is essential. Your body chemistry got you into a state of anxiety in the start, but the fear of fear is what keeps it going.

Thanks for that post, it was very good.
Have you ever tried Dr Sturt's Tranquility tea? And how do you rate? With me at the moment, I have this innate fear that I'm going to poisen myself, and so I can't eat/drink new things that I haven't already eaten before. And before this phase, I used to drink the Tranquility tea so I know that this is 'safe'. Anyway.

Kind regards

Meri

Meri, I tried Dr Stuart's Tranquility tea a while ago and it had no effect on me. The Valerian Plus tea is quite good though, but I prefer capsules myself (valerian sweaty sock odour has me retching if I'm feeling at all queasy).

Thanks for the input nolvas, it was very helpful. You've given me plenty of food for thought.

Unfortunately CBT is a no no for me as they rejected me at interview stage for being too unstable and put me back on meds. I'd been waiting for about 18 months for that appointment, and that's no exaggeration. I find I know what I need to do fairly well and I do go out and do it so long as I'm feeling reasonably well to begin with. I find entering a social situation screws the results of CBT because people can tell I'm nervous and wonder why. It affects the outcome. I suppose this might not be such a problem when you're using CBT methods to overcome agoraphobia or fear of heights etc. That's why I'm looking for something to take the edge off my tension, or make me feel more sociable.

I've never tried Taurine and will look into it. I have some L-tyrosine and L-carnitine coming my way, are these also any good for anxiety/depression/fatigue? I think I would do much better with a dopamine boost since I responded very well to low dose Solian.

I also have some GABA, but it seems like another sugar pill to me - isn't there a problem with it crossing the blood-brain barrier? Have you tried any of the GABAergic nootropics like picamilon or phenibut, are they any better?

Hi k,

I've tried a bit of amateur breathwork using tapes etc, but I'm looking into seeing a professional. Someone mentioned holotropic breathwork over on the Ayahuasca thread and I've been exploring it. I practice meditation a lot so I take the breathwork seriously, but I suspect I'll need someone to show me how to do it in person properly before I can master it.

Do you recommend anything and have you found it effective?

Thanks

Im waiting for ever for CBT, its a six month wait, so Ive decided to help myself. Ive done some research and come to the conclusion that the work done by DR Claire Weekes is top notch. The amazing stuff is that she did a lot of the work in the 1970's which was a while ago. Her main method is making face up to your fear of fear which is the crux of many anxiety disorders. Part of the treatment is trying to make your anxiety worse. The paradox of the situation is the more you try to invoke anxiety the less powerful it will come over time. Im using the book called "Self help for your nerves"

Ive being it for three days now, its not easy but it does semm to work

Yeah I have tried the tranquility tea, it's ok but the evil stinking Valerian Plus tea is a lot better. This stuff stinks my kitchen out totally, smells like old dogs and sweaty socks. Horrible smell heh.

My I suggest free CBT :)

This is not a quick fix, it's something you learn and it generally takes months, but you should see improvements.

Phenibut can make you feel more sociable, but you have to be very cautious with the dosage. It can range from totally ineffective to spaced out mind warp for several days. Kava root is also effective for sociability as long as you get high quality raw root and prepare it yourself. www.realkava.com for example.

The golden rule is it's better to help yourself than wait for others to help you. That's why we are all here sharing what information we have. Great forum :)

"Painfully Shy"

That seems like a good book from reviews. Not tried it myself.

Thank You All
