Please Help!! Can I take Inositol with my meds?

Posted by BRC on January 16, 2007, at 19:44:11

Hi,

I first want to say hello to everyone b/c I have not posted here for a while. So Hi :).

O.K. here it the deal. I have OCD really bad. I take Luvox and Remeron for that. I also have neuropothy and take Cymbalta and Lyrica for that.

But about the OCD. I have read in some books and searched the web and came across a number of people who take "Inositol" (I didn't even know what it was until I looked it up), which is a vitamin supplement for treating OCD.

The studies and research I came across stated that large doses of "Inositol" helped just as well as any SSRI or other drug treatment for OCD.

Well I was at the health food store today buying my multi-vitamins and such and saw some "Inositol" on sale and bought a couple of bottles.

I have searched the web up and down back and forth and cannot find anything stating whether it is o.k. to take both "Inositol" and SSRI's or any of the other meds I mentioned together. All I can find is "Inositol" vs SSRI's, etc.

So, my question (finally :)) is; Can you take them together or in combination. I figured since "Inositol" was a natural supplement that it wouldn't hurt to see if it helped or boosted my OCD meds.

I know I would not take as much as the studies suggested since I was already taking OCD meds. But I was just wondering if it SAFE to take them together at ALL.

Hope someone has some advice, experience, or knowledge, websites, etc. on this b/c I cannot find any info. on this.

Thanks

BRC

Personally, I don't see why not. I saw on Remedyfind.com where a 15 year old has been taking it with Prozac for his OCD. I saw that there were studies (I googled the terms "inositol" and "SSRI" together)where researchers combined inositol with SSRIs to see what effect was had on patients. If you do try it, start with a low dose, like 500mg. You could ask your physician what he thinks to be sure...however, they seldom know much about natural supplements and alternatives. I know that I'm taking taurine (an amino acid) with Paxil for my anxiety disorder and am glad to find it has helped me somewhat! I am NOT a doctor or anything like, so I can't honestly give you a qualified answer to your question. Do more research online and then you'll ultimately have to decide for yourself. Hope you have success!

Please note it is expensive to buy Inositol in bottles. If you wish to try Inositol at 'therapeutic' doses then buy it in bulk from one of the following suppliers, both of which I can recommend.

www.bulknutrition.com (USA site)

www.myprotein.co.uk (UK site)

You can purchase 1KG from the above sites very cheaply. Probably for a similar price to two bottles bought from a health store.
