Lysine And/Or L-Glutamine really helping me sleep

Posted by sregan on April 8, 2007, at 21:20:07

I take about .25 klonopin before bed every night so either of these might be augmenting that. But I'm taking (on empty stomach) 500 mg of Lysine then 5-10 minutes later 750 mg of L-Glutamine. I'm hoping the Lysine will block the NMDA Glutamate receptor. I know L-Glutimine is converted to Glutamate and GABA. So I believe I'm getting a GABA boost without the Glutamate.

The result has been deep refreshing sleep much like on the nights when I take Flexeril (every 3-4 days as not to tolerate). I'm hoping its not just temporary. Its been working for a week so far. If someone else might try it and report if it helps them. I'd love to hear it.

I thought glutamine was stimulatory.

Lysine isn't.

My wife tried the combo last night and reported that she slept much better than the previous few nights. We're going to try her on it for a few nights.

Last night I also took P5P and Taurine as they both are synergistic with L-Glutamine in producing GABA. I can't report yet since I woke at 4am and could not return to sleep until after 5:30. But slept well otherwise. I'll report back in a week.

Have you tried ZMA? I've read good reports about this supplement helping with sleep problems.

It's a proprietary combination of Magnesium, Zinc and Vitamin B6.

The duo stopped producing results so I went through my journal to see what else might have contributed. Turns out I've been taking B12 and an Aspirin each night. Those are a piece of this puzzle. I tried all 4 (along with the .25 of Klonopin) last night and again slept good, deeply, with dreams.

So It's 500 mg Lysine, 750 L-Glutamine, MethylCobalamin - 1 mg, and a 325 (about) grain Aspirin.

I've had chronic fatigue (with psychological) symptoms for over 3 years. So maybe if it helps me it might help you with similar symptoms and sleep issues.

I'm experimenting with P5P and Taurine as they are both supposed to help turn Glutamate into GABA. Updates on the future.

B6 I think helps my sleep a bit as I tend to remember my last dream of the night when I take it.

I take 100mg once a day. I wonder if its worth upping that to 200mg and seeing if I get any improvement?

Dunno if its relevant, but I recall the old wives tale that eating cheese before bedtime caused nightmares. I LOVE cheese and regularly eat a large chunk before bed but don't recall suffering the nightmares.

Give it a go, no guts no glory.

Cheese is supposed to contain tyramine which is supposed to boost NE.
