Natural approach to Crohn's?

Posted by obaterista on December 1, 2007, at 21:48:48

Hello, all, and thanks for your help. I was diagnosed with Crohn's about 8 years ago. I was taking meds (azathioprene and asacol) to help, and they did - for a while. About two years ago, after developing a new symptom (abscess - don't get me started), I decided to look into some natural alternatives.

As of today, I'm taking aloe vera (Gastric Gold brand), a probiotic, and seaweed (Sea Vegg). Though I'm not cured, I feel no worse than when I was on the meds (no longer on any). The abscess is still around, so the supplements aren't perfect. So, why am I writing?

I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions as to what I'm taking, or if there's any other natural supplements to recommend. I'm contemplating Limu, though I'm not sold on it's validity.

Thanks to all who read, and respond, to my post. Have a great day.

Erik

A friend of mine has IBS which ok isn't Crohns disease, however it is a bowel disease. I spent quite a lot time researching on the net and didn't find anything that worked for her. Then we happened to mention it in a health food shop and the knowledgeable owner suggested she try a herb called Tormentil. Amazingly it made a huge difference in a positive way. I just looked up this herb again and it can be used to treat Crohn's disease. If you haven't tried it then please consider it. The brand she uses is Bioforce Tormentil. We emailed Bioforce and they said it can be used indefinitely , but of course they advise that is up to you. So far she's used it for six months without problems.

The shop owner also recommended Quest Enzyme Digest with Betaine HCL, she hasn't tried that one yet though, but maybe it's worth looking at as well.

My fiancee was diagnosed with IBD and Ulcerative Colitis about a year ago. Her case is a severe one and over the past year she has been on several different classes of medication, high dose prednisone throughout and has failed to improve for the most part. What a nightmare it has truly been. She was put on remicade about 4 months ago and is slowly starting to see some improvements from the drug, however we are anxious to get off it as soon as possible and do not see it as a long term solution for several reasons.

I know this thread is about natural solutions, we are starting the SCdiet today. We had tried it back in august with some good initial results but after a couple weeks we gave it up because we had assumed it was the Remicade that was providing the relief. Looking back, it is now more clear that the Remicade was not helping but maybe it was the diet so we are trying it again. Here are some links to check out.

Have you tried Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN)? It's not exactly natural, but it's extremely cheap and AFAIK has few side effects.

It's kinda/sorta natural in that it temporarily blocks your opiod receptors, causing your body to produce more endorphins. At least, that's the theory.

29 years ago I had 3" section of large bowel & 6" section of small bowel removed due to Crohn's disease.

Tried various things. Here is the WONDER-cure.

Over the years, after the operation, I'd have 'flare-ups'.

This treatment ALWAYS helped, usually within 2 days.

Buy SLIPPERY ELM powder.
You make a paste of it & put it on your abdomen before bed. You take a piece of plastic (even a cut-up plastic bag) or Saran wrap, etc. You slather the paste on your tummy, cover it with the plastic, put an old pair of underwear on (to hold plastic in place....old because the S.E. can stain).

Details:
Before bed, go into bathroom. Close door. Bare tummy.

Put about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of powder in a bowl. Put small amount of hot water into powder & stir with spoon - add enough hot water so that you have a paste that's thin enough to spread on your tummy, but not runny enough that it will drip all over!
Spread paste on tummy & cover with plastic that's big enough to extend at least an inch or more outside the paste. Put on underwear to hold plastic in place. Go to bed. If you want, you can put a hot water bottle on your tummy or a heating pad for a bit before you go to sleep.

I always found that this helped me during a flare-up. Sometimes even in 1 day. Sometimes in the morning when I'd remove it (& wash the residue away) my skin would be a bit itchy).

Years ago my aunt told me that in her day, women would insert slippery elm to induce a miscarriage!

Helpful method #2.

Buy (or pick from the fields) Mullein. It's a wild plant with pale green, flannel-like leaves & a VERY tall flower spike with small yellow flowers all the way to the top.

Put about 1/2 cup into a pot with a couple of cups of water. Bring to a boil & simmer lightly for a couple of minutes. Remove from heat. I used to add a bit of milk & honey. Pour into a bowl or large measuring cup, through a strainer to get the leaves separate from the liquid. Drink a cup every 10 or so minutes.

A couple of years after my operation I had a bad recurrence of my symptoms. I was desparate. By doing the above & eating only yogurt & applesauce & slippery elm powder mixed with honey, I got completely better within a couple of days.

Hope you read this....couldn't send you a babblemail :-((

Please feel free to babblemail me if you have any questions.

Kath
