Link started this as a sidenote in a previous thread about Vitex. I thought it would be initeresting to get input from everyone. Link's top 5 are omega-3, folate, turmeric, sjw, vitex.
Mine, hmmm. SAMe, folate, maybe maca.... darn, I guess I need some more.
SJW was real good at one time, some pungeant alcohol smelling capsules, which I am told was the old GNC formula now discontinued. Kira did pretty good, but with SJW I find each brand to be as different as antidepressants are from each other...lots of trial and error in brand and dose. MACA definitely had a good feel to it, kind of a warm stimulation without jitters; but with daily use I got kind of edgy and cranky, even at miniscule doses. But on an as needed basis, it is excellent for a much needed boost in energy and mood. SAMe can be felt the first day and really kicks in by day 3, but seems to require higher and higher doses over time. Folate kicks depression in the butt in just a few days at doses of 800mcg-1200mcg.
But I don't have 5 top supps yet. Darn.

My top five:
1.)High quality fish oil
2.)Caffeine
3.)Rhodiola
4.)Vitex
5.)Forskolin
SJW would be on that list if it wasn't for the pesky photo-sensitizing side effect. I'm a dark blonde, blue-eyed person and cataracts runs in my family. It's just not worth the risk even though a highly standardized extract of hyperforin like New Chapters SC27 works amazingly well for my symptoms and is cognitive boosting rather than dulling.

What effect did the Rhodiola have on you? Was it effective for depression, including apathy, as well as anxiety? Also, did you take it at the same time as an AD (SSRI)? I had bought some to try, but when I had read that it works on MAO, I raised it with my pdoc (since I am on an AD [Lexapro]), and he didn't think it was a good idea to try it. I still really want to try it to see if it will help with the residual apathy and fatigue I am experiencing, but I don't know. I would, personally, rather try Rhodiola before adding a stimulant.
Anyway, sorry for all the questions. Anything you can tell me would be much appreciated.

In no particular order:
ALCAR (Acetyl-L-Carnitine) - for increased energy without anxiety.
Idebenone - enhances my AD.
Vinpocetine - clears 'brain fog', even from benzos.
Quality Vits & Mins - simply essential.
Echinacea Angustifolia - best thing for colds (must be E.Angustifolia as E.Purpurea does nothing for me).
Fish oil Omega 3 - simply essential (if you get none from diet).Oops, that was 6. Sorry.

Daily supplements:
1. ALCAR (plus alpha lipoic acid)
2. Good multivitamin + mineral
3. Good B-Complex
4. Magnesium MalateNot daily, but as needed:
5. TheanineI probably wouldn't take alpha lipoic acid, but there seems to be a consensus that if you take ALCAR, you should take ALA with it, so I do. I'm currently experimenting with PLCAR instead of ALCAR, although I haven't been able to determine any difference.

I was lead to believe by the reviews on, I think, Bulk Nutrition that there was some big deal about PLCAR.
But then my doc told me that the propional group was just a by product of the catabolism of fats.
So now I don't know.
Terrible taste though.

Is being the by product of fat catabolism a good or bad thing?
About all I know about how the two affect the body differently I get from here:

As far as taste, after Sulbutiamine, I don't think I'll ever complain about the taste of a supplement again. That's so bad your grandkids'll taste it.
This is the end of the thread.
