severe depression! has anyone had it this severe?

Posted by james dean123 on September 30, 2008, at 3:13:30

As many people including those closest to me have told me many times that i have a very low tolerance to stress, pain, depression etc..
i know people have suffered depressio worse than mine but i am looing for some advise! So let me begin.
I had for the first time at the age of 30 came accross the most fabulous thing in the universe that cured all my problems. It was always the solution to all my problems and it was going to make me take home the nobel prize some day. It was Cocaine! To make along story short in just over 14 months of 24/7 cocaine binge addiction! To add many years of steriod {anabolic)abuse! It cost me my house, my car, a criminal record, credit score of 790 to 810 down to 520! and thousands of dollars ! But nothing compared to the DEPRESSION and ANXIETY so severe, that I would rather not live and may even chose a painful death than experience the deepest portion of my deression and anxiety. (I believed it was HELL ON EARTH) I had a constant fear that is hard to describe but comparable to being told you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness (9 aids or cancer). The greatest pain/fear was along side the depression I was in a state i was in a state of emotional and physical pain (feeling electicity flowing thru my veins without relief. Intermitent aches thru upper extremites! I was unable to care for or even hold my 3 y/o son !!!! Horrifying, terrifying "GUT RENCHING PAIN" that is triggered by the thought of simple tasks of openping my mail, answering my phone and worst of all listen to my telephone messages!
I am a registered nurse of 8 years and have been in the geriatric psych field!
I have tried effexor that did not help. I was then placed on generic wellbutrin this just intensified my symptoms!
Its has been six months and i am able to fuction at work but have no ambition and am bored all the time .. I am not able to enjoy life or the time i spend with my 3 year old son.
Any suggestions? ECT?? A New antidepresssant?

If cocaine was useful to you before it damaged you, couldn't you think about drugs that have something in common with it?
(That would rule out SSRIs then.)

In no particular order
Parnate
Trivastal
Deprenyl
Hydergine
Rhodiola
Ixel
and since you are in the US (I assume)
Amphetamine derivatives, stimulants and such.

(Likely none of them would do the trick.)

The pity of it is that you have a 3yo son and feel like this. You just have these few special years with him.

>Horrifying, terrifying "GUT RENCHING PAIN" that is triggered by the thought of simple tasks of openping my mail, answering my phone and worst of all listen to my telephone messages!

That was interesting to me, because I have some difficulty with ordinary tasks.

Maybe you need to embark on a long term quest to repair the damage from the cocaine and the steroids?
Other people have done it, so it is possible.

I am so sorry for the horribleness you feel. I feel it too, as do many here. I know it probably doesn't help much, but you need to at least know that it is not just you, it is many people, and you are not alone in what you have to endure. I mean, yes, we are all alone, but there are thousands of other people feeling exactly what you are feeling.

All antidepressants, even ones with very close similarities to each other, have an equal chance of working. So even if one doesn't work, another could work real well. Based purely on observation and personal experience, I would suggest this:
Start with Lexapro 2.5mg a few days, up to 5mg for a few days, then 10mg and maybe 20mg. If after 8 weeks you see no improvement, then switch to Prozac 20mg. A final effort in that family would be Zoloft 50mg-200mg.

If you get a partial response to any of the above, add one of these to it: Zyprexa, Ritalin, Nortriptyline.

As for the generic wellbutrin I strongly suggest requesting your doc write all prescriptions for the original brand names and accept no generics. Brands are more expensive but in many cases worth it. There have been countless stories of how a brand was working well but symptoms returned when a generic was substituted. Everyone will tell you they are the same active ingredient and they work the same, but that is not true. The active ingredient can vary as much as 8% from pill to pill in either direction compared to the original. No one knows why yet, but somehow the supposedly inactive fillers in pills do play a role. If a generic med does not have the same exact fillers that the brand does, they are not the same drug. Hard to figure, I know, but believe me it is so true. Seen it over and over. That doesn't mean a generic won't work, it just means reliability and potential go way down. Clinical studies were based on the brand name drugs, not generics, so duplicate those studies. In the wellbutrin category I have seen countless bad reports of generic wellbutrin, where the extended release brand name seems to be the best. Like you, I responded badly to wellbutrin. It was generic.

At the very least, start with brand names until you see significant improvement. Then try switching it to generic to save money. If everything stays cool, great. If you feel you are sliding back, return to the brand.

Your doc should not have a problem prescribing the meds listed above, in that order, and should have no problem with any of the add-ons. I wrote them that way, in that order, for a reason. Too long to explain. You don't need to keep suffering as you are. One of those meds or combinations is bound to help you get out of the dungeon.

A friend of mine was started on meds for lifelong depression. He was started straight away with low dose lexapro and low dose risperdal at the same time. He actually felt much improvement in just 4 days. Usually it takes weeks, but sometimes combination work faster. Zyprexa or Risperdal are good ones to accelerate an antidepressant, as is Ritalin. So if you need fast, really fast, consider starting two meds like that at the same time.

If at any time one of them makes you feel a lot worse, like wellbutrin did, ditch it right away. Move straight to the next.

Thanks for the previous helpful insight and information blueberry! I just started celexa the (generic) 20mg daily for about 3 days now..
What is your oppinion on Seroquel in place of the zyprexa! I now both have less undesireable side effects in regards the older antispychs! In my expeience when i worked on a neurobehavioral head trauma unit zyprexa caused some weight gain and severe lethary!

At least James you are able to work and function somewhat, and have a son, and have managed to get thru all those problems. Not to out due you but I have worked only one year in the last 8, have been bankrupted, no medical insurance, broke, SSI and SSDI have turned me down 3 times, no kids, no wife or girlfriend, live at home with parents, can't afford meds and I am hanging on by a literal thread. So hang in there, at least you work where you can get help. God bless and take care. Have been dealing with mine for 16 years.

I stumbled on a quick and powerful cure for my horrible depression. After 30 years and ECT and many meds, I was astonished to happen upon what so far (four months) has been a completely effective treatment. I am not a doctor nor have any formal medical education, but a lot of reading and dangerous experimentation on myself has yielded what to me is a miracle cure. It involves direct current applied to your skull. I will not post more details on a public forum. You will have to email me. My method has worked for me and three other people so far. Takes about 30 seconds, and is effective in a few minutes to three hours. FOR GODS SAKE, DO NOT TRY THIS ON YOURSELF WITHOUT DOING A LOT OF YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND READING AND OBTAINING TERM LIFE INSURANCE, and/or email me and I will tell you how I do it. In various modes it is currently being researched by the Educated in universities, and it is certainly not FDA approved. I am not claiming it will cure anyone, but it has cured me and some other seriously depressed people. THE MEDICAL PROFESSION WOULD CONSIDER MY METHOD ABSOLUTELY RECKLESS AND WOULD LOSE THEIR LICENSE IF THEY EVEN MENTIONED IT TO A PATIENT. But then, the Medical Profession is not a human being, it is a Bureaucracy, and will never go through the anguish and desparation you and I have gone through. I may be living dangerously, but at least I can live what life I have left with joy and peace.

Bless you,
Neil
