Balancing Calcium/Magnesium

Posted by Lao Tzu on May 16, 2010, at 11:36:46

I have to say that since I've been balancing my magnesium:calcium ratio, I have been sleeping better and have less fatigue during the day, which translates as less depression since I am a low energy depressive. I still have to take other vitamins in addition to the calcium and magnesium, but I believe these two minerals have made a big difference for me. Awhile ago, I started using magnesium oxide, but found that it worked poorly. So I switched to chelated forms of magnesium (citrate) and calcium (amino acid chelate), and I have to say they work a million times better. I threw the magnesium oxide in the trash. It's junk!! Anyway, just wanted to pass this on to anybody suffering from depression who has insomnia and low energy as their symptoms. It could be that your magnesium and calcium is not balanced properly. For me, I find that a 1:1 ratio works best. A lot of sources say to take double the amount of calcium as magnesium, but that doesn't work well for me. Also, I take all of my cal/mag supplements at bedtime because they can be sedating, and I don't want to be sedated during the day. So far, magnesium citrate works very well for me. I had tried magnesium glycinate a long time ago, and I really didn't like the glycine part. It was too sedating for me, but may work for other people. There are many different forms of magnesium out there, some work better than others. Try different forms until you find one that agrees with you. But I would recommend staying away from magnesium oxide. It is poorly absorbed.

2:1 is what I was taught to take also and I must split my calcium magnesium levels three times a day as the body can only absorb so much at a time. You don't mention your dose? I take mine for osteoporosis with K3, D3, and strotium citrate as the raeletate not available in the states. Phillipa

Try easing up on the calcium for a few days, Phillipa. You might find that you have less baseline anxiety/muscle tension.

Hombre thought magnesium was a relaxant? Muscle relaxant? Phillipa

Right. And calcium is used in muscle contraction, and it may also lead to over-stimulation in the brain, anxiety, agitation. Just wondering what would happen if you just took magnesium for a little while. We hear so much about taking calcium, but perhaps it is not always necessary considering the fact that in populations where there is plentiful magnesium in the diet, women tend not to get osteoporosis even with a relatively low calcium intake.

Right now, the dose I'm working on is about 650mg of magnesium citrate and 500mg of chelated calcium per day. I've heard that a 1:1 ratio may be better for some people, but I'm not saying a 2:1 ratio isn't correct for others. There is some debate over ratios. I've even heard some people need double the amount of magnesium to calcium. I think you just have to be sensible. Don't overdo it with either mineral, you know? I tend to do worse on very high doses of calcium, so I keep it at about 500mg per day. I also have to mention that I take calcium antacids for my GERD symptoms, so I am actually getting more than 500mg of calcium per day. I find, however, that the chelated forms of calcium work better for me than plain old calcium carbonate, but calcium carbonate is used in a lot of calcium supplements used for preventing osteoporosis. So I guess it works, I just like the chelated forms more.

I just switched to the calcium magnesium k, D strotium found in algae forms? What's the difference? Phillipa

I'd say the algae forms might be more bioavailable and synergistic, but I don't know for sure. Fish eat algae for sustenance, but don't know if humans would benefit the same. It's a long shot if you ask me.
