I recently began to take fish oil again after a break and, while I'm not sure if it's the culprit, I feel like my hair has thinned. Has anyone else had this happen? Nordic Naturals, so it's a good brand, and only half a cap. I can't imagine why sardines and anchovies would do this, but some other message boards cite anectdotal accounts, though some cite fish oil as great for hair! Also, other ways of boosting Omega 3s/EPA if fish oil has an affect on hair?

Hey man. Keep in mind that, in western+industrialized societies, men tend to lose some hair. I think upwards of 50% of men experience some degree of hair loss by middle-age...and that's before old age thins the hair out some more.
I'm just saying that the two might not be related. Kind of like I'm male, I dyed my hair all the time as a teenager (Manic Panic...hell yeah!), and then it thinned. I put off treatment because I thought I'd "done it to myself" with hair dye. Then I went on supplements+propecia (I get it off the net from India..$5/month...awesome!), and now my hair's pretty thick.
If fish oil helps you, I'd say work around the hair loss. In Europe and the UK, Loreal has these pills called "Hair Mass" that have taurine+grape seed extract+zinc+green tea extract. I looked up the formula, and they use relatively low doses. I got on vitacost, high-dosed it, added in propecia, and now my hair is awesome. Everything in the formula helps your overall health, too.
Here's my anti-bald supplement line up:
2 gram taurine (1 dose)+1 gram green tea extract (vitacost brand)+OptiZinc (1 30mgs cap)+200mgs Grape Seed Extract (vitacost)+2.6 grams borage oil (2 1.3 grams caps, vitacost brand)+1 Life Extension "Super Absorbable Soy Isoflavones" capsule (provides 50ish mgs soy isoflavones).
That's on top of my ongoing Orthomolecular treatment and, like I said, imported finasteride.

Thanks! Yeah, I know that the hair is going no matter what, but on two different trilas of fish oil, I noticed thinning up front, May not be related, but I thought I'd explore some other options just in case. I dyed my hair a lot in my teens and 20s, so I'm sure that didn't help either!
I used to take taurine all of the timehmm. I might try it again. I'll give green tea a try. that's about the only thing I haven't tried. Vitacost is awesome! What does borage oil and the soy isoflavones do? I'm wary of propecia due to the sexual side effects and possible added depression.Regarding fish oil, have you ever tried krill? Would that be a possible alternative way of getting EPA?

hey man. Not big on fish oil. I eat lots of fish. The borage oil is supposed to help skin (I have eczema...better than using cortison) and hair (makes it shoft and siny, if nothing else).
Soy isoflavones+green tea extract=natural Propecia, supposedly. Lower DHT levels. Taurine+green tea extract+zinc+grape seed extract=improved hair density, primarily by preventing hormones from damaging the scalp and undoing some damage to the follicles.
I may quit Propecia once my stockpile runs out. My theory was to take propecia w/ the supplements to jump start and get better results. Now that I've got a nice head of hair, I think I can drop the Propecia once my pills run out and just stick with the vitamins, maybe add in something else for hair, like tocotrienols (the latest and greatest version of vitamin E, supposedly good for hair loss).
Seriously, though: taurine+green tea extract+zinc+grape seed. If you high dose the green tea, maybe you won't need the grape seed. Sounds like a lot of stuff, but its fairly cheap and it'll save your hair.

Hi,
I tried Life Extension green tea extract a couple of weeks ago and, I have to say, I hate the effect. A slight, smothering depression all day after taking it. I stopped and feel better-ish. I don't get the same affect from grape seed, I'm sure because of the lack of theanine. Any idea how much grape seed I should take to have comparable hair-friendly green-tea-like effects? I also picked up tocotrienols. I take them at night and haven't noticed much, at least nothing bad so I'll stick with it.

hey. I just started tocotrienols (100mgs/day) to replace my Propecia. so far, so good.
I don't know how to replace green tea extract w/ grape seed extract. I guess just 1-2 grams taurine+zinc+100-200+ mgs grape seed extract. I'm no expert; I just high dose everything, that's all.
good luck! You might wanna throw in a b-50 or b-100 to bring it all together. Just a thought.

Not sure about the fish oil but out of everything I've tried one thing is for certain when it comes to hair. Resveratrol has significantly stopped my hair loss. My hair is even softer as well. Have you ever given it a try?
Suppossedly it's an herbal MAOI but I've also heard it described as an SNRI. Does give me a bit of energy, wakefulness, and sometimes a small benefit to mood. It's very possible it's having a more substantial positive effect but I been going through a very hard time so it's been difficult to tell.
For reference the brands I been taking lately are Resveratrol Forte, as well as previously ResveratrolRich from Natural Factors.
