It's best to start with a low dose - 500 mg - and if that doesn't help after a week or two, gradually increase the dose. Most people take between 1,000 and 4,000 mg. Tryptophan should be taken on an empty stomach.

do you have 5htp where you live? I'm no expert (hopefully Hugh will weigh in on this), but 5htp is fairly well-studied and (I think) has some antioxidant properties along with the antidepressant, anxiolytic properties.
Just a thought.

She has been taking 500mg for a week. She says she has gotten a little less emotional especially bad emotions like anger.
She doesnt take it on an empty stomach. Rather she takes it in the abscence of protein rich foods. She will be taking 1000mg in a week,
If she goes higher than 1000mg, should she still take it all at nighttime?

She should try taking it all in one dose. If she can't tolerate a large, single dose, then she can divide her doses.
