My pdoc thinks my daughter should see someone!!!!

Posted by woolav on May 21, 2005, at 2:16:58

Hello, I have a 15 yr old daughter. Great Kid, no problems from her aside from mood swings. Her father is BP and I have been dx as BP2 now. So my pdoc suggested I take her to a therapist bc of the severe mood swings. But, In doing research with her insurance (diff. than mine), I cant find a T in my area that will treat children. The only person I found that does, Is actually my new pdoc!! And he is the one who suggested she see someone. I am wondering if its a good idea to take her to him, since he knows a little of mine and her fathers backround now. Or would that be a conflict of interest.????????????

I see it as the same as a family GP...
It's often easier to treat a whole family than an individual.

You get all of the dynamics...

i know you said you found your answer but I just thought Id add a bit....it all depends on your relationship with her. I think the only problem that might exist is between your daughter and the T, where their might be an inability on your daughters part to feel she can open up freely and honestly without him reporting back to you. Some times adult T's will work with kids I think?? and vice versa

well, my doc wont see her, says its a conflict of interest like i thought. So, i am trying to find another. (and with her insurance im having a hard time bc there are not alot who treat kids) at least in my area. So, im on the phone all the time trying to find someone. I want her to go because of her anger issues. I think that since having both parents with bp and and bp2, it would be a good idea to take her to someone....
I'll let you all know when i find someone.
THanks

S,

As I have posted on the other page, my daughter and I are both BPII. I found out that I was BP, after she was diagnosed. The doc. suspected because it runs in families, and he talked to us as family at first, and noticed the anxiety in my personality. That lead to the MMPI testing, etc. It is a good idea for your daughter to see someone. BP usually comes around the age of 15 or 16, and thinking back, that's when I first noticed myself having the symptoms. My mother didn't do anything about it, at the time. It took my daugther's being diagnosed for me to go far enough with the testing to get the actual diagnosis. I had a feeling for years that something wasn't right. I am like a light switch, that can be turned on and off, 20 times during the day. You are doing the right thing by addressing this now, and getting it under control. I was there with my daughter at 15, and now at 17, we are finally getting better. -L
