NITROUS OXIDE, do you hate it too?

Posted by portage on July 16, 2005, at 23:15:59

Nitrous Oxide- you know, laughing gas.
Has anyopne had an unpleasant experience from the gas?

I had a very low-concentrated dose of the gas when I got my cavities filled, I felt like I was floating- I was terrified I would hit the ceiling, and every sound I heard reverberated and echoed, like what happens when I have a panic attack. I couldn't talk so I just pulled the mask off and my dentist was asking me "whats wrong?" but I couldn't move my mouth. I thought, yet again, that I was dying, and made quite an *ss of myself. Soon I just felt flu-ish and nauseous.

It was quite unpleasant.

I've done exhaustive research (via google) and found no incidences of nitrous oxide inducing panic; conversly, it is used mainly to PREVENT panic attacks in anxious patients.

my mom loves the way it makes her feel; she gets laughing gas when she get's a simple cleaning!

has ANYONE besides me had an unpleasant experience w/ nitrious oxide?

i'm just curious.

It was a bit iffy for me. I could see how it could be really horrible, but I felt detached and not unpleased to feel deranged.

I had a bad experience with nitrous oxide at the dentist's office. The nitrous made me hyperventilate (probably because I was starting to panic). I was starting to panic because the nitrous was all warm and made me feel strange. I felt like I was suffocating. The hyperventilation amplified the effects of the nitrous of course. I starting getting really tingly and numb and then I really started to panic.

The dentist decided to skip the nitrous after all, even though I was extremely nervous of getting my impacted wisdom teeth removed...even the Ativan he gave me did not prevent this panic.

I thought it was wierd too...how the nitrous made me panic.

Yep, I hate it, won't take it at the dentist, and won't let my kids have it. It makes me paranoid as hell.

Paranoid...yes, that's the word! That describes what happened to me. I wonder why it makes some people paranoid and not others. Pot makes me paranoid as well.

Nitrous oxide is a dissociative, meaning that it is an antagonist at NMDA receptors. The floating feeling is almost certainly due to this effect. Feeling as though you're dying is also not uncommon with dissociative drugs. Many people with panic disorder state that they panic because they experience dissociative symptoms (Arthur-Jones & Fox, 1994). I think that different people often have dissimilar reactions to the feeling of dissociation. Because you've had panic attacks before, I suspect that you may be more likely than most people to experience the negative effects that you describe.

Hey Portage, I remembered this.
I was in hospital for back surgery. I'd been given the premed. Eventually I was wheeled into the theatre, where they actually do the operation, with big lights and what looked like a stage with lots of kinky equipment. They put the canula in my vein and slapped a on a nitrous breathing tube. And then started to talk to me, what do you do for a living etc. At the time I wasn't doing much at all, so I'm getting more and more weird from the nitrous, I'm waiting for the darkness to descend on me, and I'm trying to think of what to say about what I do with my life as I stare up into these really bright lights, and I thought, O this is just awful.

Hi Declan,

It sounds awful. I'd rather have rapid IV induction of anaesthesia.

We have NOS cafe's over here. The food grade (for cream whippers) is freely available and it isn't illegal to ingest it.

The first couple times I had it I felt like I was choking. Probably because of the way I was told to inhale it. After the first couple of times I started to enjoy the feeling, though. I can see how people could panic on it.

I love nitrous oxide. It's the only positive thing about going to the dentist. We are good friends and ex-neighbors--so he cuts it up as much as the law allows.

I hate it as well.

I had with my wisdom teeth about 3 years ago- I felt like I was disappearing. It was a very bizarre feeling and now that I think of it, it is the same type of feeling I get when I have a panic attack.

It's like I'm not real or like I'm in a dream or a tunnel and floating. I HATE it.

I smoked pot twice a teenager- HATED it.. LOATHED it. It was that same "weird head" feeling.

Why people pay money to feel that way is so beyond me. LOL

Hated Nitrous, quit smoking pot because I just couldn't handle the paranoia anymore, kept getting panic attacks, and two women in my family have the same reaction to it. I wish I liked that stuff though. I'm jealous of the people who have such a pleasant time with it :P

I had nitrous oxide once in my twentys for a root canal , it was great. I felt so good and had sexual thoughts about my dentist. Which freaked me out cause I was twenty and he was much older.
Now years later I am 48 and have just had two trips to the dentist and she used nitrous. The first time I did not feel anything, certainly nothing to help me relax. I was more anxious if anything. Yesterday my last visit, it was awful. I felt like I couldn't get any air and it for sure makes me panic. My dentist thinks its some miracle pain killer, so she just took a infected dental implant out of my jaw bone with just a tiny shot as a pain blocker. I never got numb and the pain was so severe I thought I would die. She kept saying breath and as she dug into my jaw bone to get out the infection I went to the ceiling. She thought I should of been numb and that the nitrous was gonna handle the pain. BS I about died. That stuff was awful and I mark that experience as the worst pain in my life. Child birth had nothing on that. As for versaid it made me go up and feel painic and the nurses were astonished of the oppisite effect I had on it. I guess I get the oppisite effect on both things... No more for me...Today I can't breathe as well as before I had it... The dentist didn't taper off or just let me breathe regular oxygen after the procedure she just gased me and then removed it. I found it hard to get normal air for a bit... Good luck ya'll and as for implants it has been a nightmare. Thats a whole other subject...
