Is it possible to lose weight while on Remeron?

Posted by ClearSkies on August 24, 2007, at 21:17:56

I'm doing really well on 30mg Remeron, but I've gained about 5 lbs. of hard lost weight. (That is, I worked really hard to lose it, and it sprung back on really quickly.) My body sense is that I've stabilized and I won't tend to put on more weight.

I'm still in a bit of a stupor in the mornings, and can't see that a stimulant is in my future, since anxiety is still a part of my daily life. My energy level is slightly above that of a sloth, but I'm not yet able to throw myself out the front door and go for a walk every day. Ugh.

But what I'm really posting about is whether others have been able to lose weight they've gained due to medication changes while still taking those meds. Particularly Remeron, I guess, since it's one of those drugs that is notorious for causing weight gain. There just isn't any way I want to give it up and go back to my horrid days of lying listless on the floor again. Shudder.

Maybe I'll just turn this into a diary while waiting for the rush of responses to my post...

Have all but banned processed sugar from the house. I went into a flurry of baking cookies and biscotti when I first started taking Remeron - I *had* to get my instant energy, my body demanded it! I've since transferred the source of the sugars to fresh and dried fruits. I love melons and will get a whole one, cut it all up and keep it handy in the fridge for when the munchies call.

Trying to do the same with salad items - I started pricing out the difference between buying a bag of washed and torn lettuce and buying an entire head, and I nearly fell over! When you've decided to eat a big salad as a meal once a day, how you buy your veggies makes a difference to your wallet. So I've changed how I buy those, too. Part of this is an effort to make me think more about the food before I put it in my mouth. It takes work to get to gratification. So I'm tending to buy the veggies whole (organic and local when available), and then spending time after I shop doing the prep work, putting the cut up veggies into little baggies so it's no effort to throw a salad together when it's time to eat.

Have cut way down on cheese :-( my true love, the fattier the more I love them, though still having some to keep a calcium source. (Who drinks milk any more? Anybody here?) For protein instead, I keep almonds - my favourite nut, ever - on hand, to toast and munch on, put into a salad, or in a sandwich. Yum.

OK, time to go grocery shopping. Just say No! to Pop Tarts and Munchos!

Watch those carbs, increase veggies and fruits, and run around the house all day long.
Good luck, CS, you can do it! Keep on truckin'

yes it is possible--hmmm, how about Nardil? » ClearSkies

That really does sound like a good plan. So add a Go-go-go! from me, too.

And I'll say it for myself since I really need to do something different about the weight I've gained on Nardil. I think I just ate my last peanut butter M&Ms, at least for awhile. I suppose I should have a formal period of mourning, but I'm not sure how or how long. :)

But I'm going to try what you suggested, even if it means more frequent trips to the grocery for fresh stuff. Oh, and trips to my tomato plants, which are bearing ripened fruit now. Woo hoo! First ever for me. (Dog hair hung on plants like tinsel seems to keep the hungry critters away!) :)

Oh, and I read something about eating more water-based foods, as they are lower in calorie and fill you up. So I've been adding soup to the diet, though I have to be careful.

Go ladies!

If nothing else, I've been thinking more about what I put into my body, and how much energy that's expended in converting the food into energy. So, the fruit and vegetables are a big PLUS for me. I'm eating potatoes - baked, not fried, for a change, as my carbohydrate intake. But the lettuce as a head instead of a bag is a humungeous waste saver. Yes, I have to CLEAN the lettuce, but that's probably a good thing, anyway. And I've been checking the sources on the organic produce to see if the stuff is coming in from local farms. (Makes no sense at all to buy organic blueberries if they came in on their own seat from South America.) And the local grocery store produce manager is USELESS. Has NO IDEA where the produce comes from. Wouldn't recognize a ripe cantelope melon if it knocked him over on a savannah. (Which I fully expect one might do.)

here's that other end of the parentheses. Pesky critters, tend to wander off without notice.

I just spent 6 bucks on 4 salads' worth of prebagged lettuce. I dunno if it's worth it, but it's not like h is going to cut up the danged lettuce for me. I might as well pay someone in CA to do it.

How goes it with everything?

Well, my weight has not gone up but my energy level remains very low on Remeron. Just got back this evening from our long weekend in New York. I started out with an owie on my little toe (blister) and I hobbled around Manhattan the entire weekend. To my credit I did not stop locomotion, but it wasn't a pretty sight at all.

I have to shape up my feet for the BIG vacation at the end of this month (France). The shoes, which I tried out this weekend, were a dismal bust, so I'm back to my comfy but very American looking sneakers. Who cares, as long as I can walk?

I am utterly disgusted by how I look and feel. Since the weight hasn't changed, the difference is obviously in my mind and how I think I should be looking. Self acceptance is an issue. I'm pretty depressed at the moment. I would really like to like myself this way and not hate myself, but this is what it is. Roly poly yuck.

I'm on lettuce rations for the next 10 days until we leave.
