Sinus infections suck

Posted by gardenergirl on September 30, 2007, at 0:23:51

Just need to whine a bit.

Everything from the base of my neck upward hurts. Even my teeth. My voice is gone. I can't breathe. Nose is starting to get chapped. My throat hurts, so I don't feel like eating or drinking, but I need to stay hydrated. Eyes are dry so I'm not wearing my contacts. Damn eyeglasses are sliding down my nose and getting smudged faster since my skin is oily. Taking Cipro means I have to juggle the meds and supplements I usually take even more (Cipro absorption is reduced by iron and other mineral salts). Ran out of Lamictal. Can't take decongestants that are usually pretty effective due to Nardil. Didn't have Mucinex in the medicine cabinet like I thought. Pharmacy charged me twice what I should have paid for the Lamictal the pdoc called in, so I have to go back tomorrow. Pdoc called in 150 mg tablets, so I have to cut them in half to take 75 mg twice a day, and it tastes terrible (remind me not to complain about taking six 25 mg tabs a day). and so on and so on and so on...

Dear God, is this a bitching ten plus? I guess that was more than whining "a bit". Sorry

I hate being sick. Always get more depressed...

Hi GG

Having a stuffy nose really messes up one's mood. You wake up tired and groggy simply because of having difficulty breathing while asleep. If this happens to you often, it might be that you have a deviated septum, which can be corrected surgically using a septoplasty. I have suffered from this problem for years, and was recently diagnosed as having a deviated septum. I am having it fixed later this year. I am so excited! These last few days I have taken a nasal decongestant before going to bed, and the difference in my energy levels when I wake up the next morning are simply amasing. I get up feeling refreshed and energetic. I now believe that poor breathing while asleep may be the chief cause of my poor mood over the years.

Hi Jamal,
You're spot on about how disrupted sleep affects mood. I'm glad you found a connection and upcoming solution for you. I hope it all goes well. :)

I can't take a nasal decongestant since I take an MAOI. At least haven't found any that I can take. So I make due with an antihistamine and a spray for the air and pillows that contains essential oils which help breathing. I snore, and this spray along with a Breathe-Right strip on my nose help.

Keep us posted about how the surgery goes when you have it.

Hi GG

When I had a sinus infection (at least that's what it seemed like) I took things you cannot, like pseudoephedrine and stuff like that.
But there were some things I took that you might be able to take, which are.....
olive leaf
andrographis
vitamin C
antiallergy herbs (if appropriate) like.....
albizia
baical skullcap

And then there's the neti pot.

Such high maintenance, hey?

Bummer that you're feeling so bad. My sympathies - I get really down and out when I'm sick and I have had a LOT of sinus infections! Thankfully I'm still taking pseudoephedrine for which I obviously should be grateful!

One comforting "treatment" I've found is chicken broth with garlic. Really! I buy it in about a 14 oz. (?) can - think it's Sue Bee or something like that - for around a buck (or less), pour it into a large coffee cup and heat it in the microwave for a little less than a minute. Sipping it like you would coffee or tea is really soothing. Somehow it's comforting and I've heard that garlic has some medicinal properties ... never mind social issues.

Do you have allergies? I've found that finally Xolair is helping me and I'm taking a little less pseudoephedrine. It's really expensive, though - need insurance!

The hassles with screwed up pharmacies (I thought I had a corner on that!) will go better when you're well. Truly, having the tools to deal with these things will improve when you're feeling better.
