hello,First time posting here. I've been looking all over the
net trying to educate myself before I go to a doctor. I've been
having some panic attacks. I've had 3, but inbetween it's all about
when the next one will hit. I can barely go out anymore without having
some form of anxiety. I've read about alot of meds, and I just wanted
some advice. If you've had panic attacks, or general anxiety disorder and
are currently on a medicine that has helped you out alot, could you please
let me know? I'm not depressed, it's more about the anxiety. I've always
been a worrier, but needless to say it's gotten alot worse.I don't want to jump into meds that will only make things worse. let's
just say family memebers who are on certain meds, make me worry about whether
or not they do anything at all. Some of the saddest, anxious people I know
are on some sort of medication, and I really want to avoid that.So any advice, or help would be very much appreciated. I'm just tired
of being scared all the time.Thank you,
misti

I don't have panic disorder, but a 'mood disorder' not classified as anything specific (mostly depression, some anxiety), but just wanted to say that it's all about finding the right doctor. Don't be afraid to ask all the questions you feel you need to of your doctor, take him your research, tell him your fears.
Meds are not all bad, although you will find many folks who have had lots of trouble on them. Unfortunately, there are a lot of meds out there and everyone has a different reaction to them - the same thing doesn't work for everyone. BUT - they CAN work!
Focus right now on finding the right doc - ask around, find someone you feel comfortable with, don't be afraid to see someone different if you don't like the feeling you get with the first one. Then be very frank and honest about your concerns with medication.
Have you thought about psychotherapy? It can be a very effective treatment for GAD. Might be even more effective when combined with medication. Just something more to consider.
Welcome to Psychobabble.

Hi,
I've had a lot of luck with the benzo class of meds for panic disorder- klonopin and xanax in particular. I also have had therapy (CBT) to learn coping skills so that I can minimize the meds I take. My pdoc told me the key was to stop the panic attacks first, then work on dealing with the disorder. I hope you get help soon and feel better- judy

Thank you very much for both of your answers Penny and Judy.
i've been putting this off for awhile. Convincing myself I could handle
it on my own. But I've finally just hit a wall, where I have to try something.
It stops me from doing things I enjoy, and spending time with loved ones
that's too much.Thank you again for the advice. I'm going to try and make an appointment this week
and I'm already getting all the questions I want to ask ready. I did try just therapy
years ago. I just have bad luck with those. The last one I had squeezed me in on her lunch
hour, and she never remembered what I told her from the last visit. I might consider it again,
I'm not against it. It's all a matter of what my insurance will cover.Thank you again for answering me, I really appreciate it.

Welcome! And sorry if it's confusing here, but Psycho-Babble is the board for medication-related questions. Here's a link:

Hi,
Thanks for the welcome. I don't find it too confusing. It was a nice site
to find. But my post was a question purely of what meds are best for what
I'm going through. So i have a basis for what to research myself and what to
ask my doctor about. Is this not the section for that?

So what section should I be in? The link that was
posted was to my first post. So now it is becoming confusing.

Hi Misti.
If you go to the very top of this page, under the sunflower/Dr. Bob picture, you'll see a list of the various boards with links to get to them. The medication board is called just "Psycho-Babble". If you click on that link, you'll find the entire medication board. If you look down, you might find your post that was redirected by Dr. Bob. If not, you can always post your question again.
