Question for all?

Posted by JenStar on July 16, 2004, at 18:00:58

hi all,
I was wondering: How much of what you talk about with Babble-Friends can you / do you discuss with non-Babble Friends? Is this a primary outlet for these discussions, or is it one of several places where you can get support & feedback?

I'm asking because I've found it to be very therapeutic here. I've found several hypochondriacs like me, and they understand what I've been going through. I don't feel judged and found to be stupid / lacking / weak / etc....not that my "regular" friends do that (they don't!) but they also don't really get some of the things that I'm going through.

Just curious.

Oh, g*d. This place knows more about me and what's going on than my entire body of contacts IRL. For me, that's what is therapeutic about it.

Hi JenStar,

See, I can call PartyCloud (as I affectionately call her) such names as BONKERS and PSYCHO, and she'll just say, "Yup, that's me!""

Now, if you told your "normal" friends that you were WACKED (is this PartyCloud's new name now?), they would probably back away from you, making sure your hands were in full view!! LOL!!

Yes, I think this site is a wonderful way for us to communicate with others who GET what we're saying. There is a sense of comfort and security in knowing that there are others that feel the same way or are going through the same thing, and that allows for the outpouring of conversations that we would NEVER mention to most people!!

I can also say that I'm sure that Dr. Bob has intervened on the behalf of more than one person on this board in order to ensure their safety. It's a safe place, JenStar.

Hugs,
Sandy

And I thought you knew me, Sandy. I am not only stiff and crunchy, I prefer my cereal *without* milk. That's the tough cookie you got here, sister.

haha. you guys made me giggle.

i've told a couple of people about "the crazy board i'm on" but that's about it. one girl knows that it helps me a lot to relate to other people, but she's on a lot of different boards herself, so she understands. but i don't go too much into it. kinda like therapy-- i don't talk about that much either :)

My online friends know much much more about me than anyone IRL except my boyfiend. When my boyfriend and I were still 'just good friends' he found my online journal, and that changed everything between us. Then he knew about my online life and what was going on inside my mind, he saw photos of my self injury and poems I had written.

I still have online places I go to talk online that he doesn't know about, but he's happy for me to do that. It's good to have a place that's totally separate, accepting, and just for you.

sounds like a great bf. you're lucky :) (nm) » cubic_me

fires,
so, if one is a hypochondriac, does that mean that they never have health problems?

why don't you pick on me for a while? i assure you, i don't mind it and it won't hurt me at all.

and you won't have to look very hard at all either. i'm anything but consistent...

so, if you are looking for inconsistency, i assure you, i'm your gal! and i really don't mind either!

have at it!

Merriam Webster's defines hypochondria as the following: extreme depression of mind or spirits often centered on imaginary physical ailments.

JenStar says they found physical (that means non-imaginary) evidence for an ailment.

So basically, you just called her a liar.

Nice. *Real* nice.

KK,

(Here I go getting-cerebral again.....)

Of the nine senses, the vagus nerve is reponsible for collecting the "wellness" stuff, and providing a moment by moment snapshot of our....... wellness.

If we view sickness as an event, we deny illness and sickness as part of life as a whole; a process not an event. Children attach expectations to an event; they don't relate to process.

As adults, [if] we keep the habits of obligations and expectations, we perform ever worser and worser, the older we get. However, if between the ages of 15 and 25, we gently and appropriately move into habits of plans, goals, and personal contracts, giving up our childhood obligations (from us) and expectations (to us). We stop seeing sickeness, elation, tiredness, being drunk or loaded, or being angry, as important events. Instead, they are all part of the process.

We can begin a new habit of wearing our adulthood as a "nice-fitting suit". Hypochondria will stop ruling our awareness, and we will start getting sick and well just like everybody else.

I'm not taking any thing away. I am adding to our "war-chest" of talents and attributes. Be curious. See how it fits.

<<<hypo = low, chondria = welness-image... This implies attitude... Isn't attitude sourced in opinion? Can't Jenstar have an opinion, fires have an opinion, you have an opinion, and I have an opinion, with-out any of us rolling out our bad-habit of getting hostile about any difference we might see? (only a question..... somewhat rhetorical, even)

oh, good question! In addition to having some "real" issues (that were misdiagnosed), I also -- all my life -- have suffered from 'imaginary illnesses.' It started as a child when I saw things on channel 11 (Chicago) about surgeries & illnesses & was SURE I had them. I would cry and cry and my mom couldn't comfort me. Later on, as I got older, I "got" cancer multiple times (not really, of course - just thought I had it), had a bone disease, and lately thought I had MS/ALS.

Usually, though, I can tell when I have something "really" wrong, and it frustrates me when a doc doesn't listen.

Anyway, thank yOU for listening!

Yes, it's the 10th CN, though I'm not sure about the theory of it being responsible for wellness -surely there is alot more to it than that. I've been taught that it mainly serves as a symathetic regulator of autonomic responses, but know little of its sensory functions. Any ideas?
