Ah, therapy!

Posted by Tamar on December 30, 2005, at 11:24:16

I've been so depressed I had to see the doctor today. I woke up 20 minutes before my appointment and had to run to the doctors' office. It's a 15 minute walk; I can run it in 5 minutes in good weather, but it's snowing here. I made it in about 7 minutes. So I was really hot when I arrived and had to strip down to my vest-top thingy (it's not obscene, just a little revealing). And of course, I'd forgotten I'd cut myself a few days ago (on my arms) and naturally the doc saw it and asked about it. Argh! How stupid am I? Oh well, at least he wasn't freaked out by it.

It wasn't my usual doctor (she's on holiday this week). I told him I'd started taking double my dose of prozac for no good reason except that life just got harder because my mother-in-law is in hospital. He said it was OK to double the meds dose.

He also asked if I wanted a referral to anyone else. I said I hoped to do more therapy but that my regular doctor had said she felt I'm too depressed to benefit from therapy right now. He said he would refer me. So he is going to write to my therapist and it will probably take a few weeks to get to the top of the waiting list, but it looks as if I am going to see my T again.

I can't hardly believe it. I feel a bit nervous...

I am so happy for you , what a blessing in discuise! :) I am glad you are going to therapy. Have you called him yet? So do returning clients get top billing or do you go top the bottom of the list?
((((Tamar)))) Good for you to seek help when you knew you needed it. That is very hard to do, and you did it. You should be proud of yourself and thank goodness that other doctor was on your side. :)

That's wonderful! » Tamar

I'm so glad you saw a doctor who felt able to give you the recommendation. I hope that waiting list moves quickly. :)

Freud would say there are no real mistakes, just not conscious decisions. I think having the MD see your cuts was probably a good thing. I'm glad he recognized that you need some support and help. I wish the medications were doing a better job. Did he change them? I know that after a little while on wellbutrin alone I got whacked with some enormous waves of anxiety. It took me awhile to figure out that they were partly caused by the medication. Sometimes I feel like a science experiment in all of this.

Do you know why you've become more depressed? Is this an anniversary or has something changed for you? I think you've felt yourself slipping for a few months now...I'm worried about you.

I would be anxious about going back too -- it stirs up so much stuff, good and bad. I hope the wait isn't too long. Until then, feel free to lean here. Maybe we can help.

Hugs from me,
Daisy

I'm so glad you were able to ask for more therapy. I felt like doing a little happy dance for you too :)

And I really hope the wait is not too long. I imagine it will be hard with lots of anticipation, anxiety, nervousness, etc. And maybe a thrill of excitement with the thought of seeing him again.

I take it you're seeing your original T again and not a different, longer-term T? I think I remember you saying that your original T didn't do long-term therapy?

Also, I always find it helpful with depression to know that I'm actually doing something towards getting better (eg making an appt to see a T). I find it eases things just a little tiny bit.

I'm glad you've taken steps towards something you've wanted for a long time now.

I was just reading that an increased dosage of Prazac (and others) can increase the feeling of depression. (Latest issue of Consumer Reports.) Can you call the T and ask her about it while you wait to see her?

Feel better soon.

That's really interesting--that's totally what happened to me when I was on it. What else was in this issue of CR? Other psych stuff?

Best,

That's great! I'm so glad for you, and good for you for making the most of the opportunity the new doc presented.

Nervous is good, in some ways. It means that you care, and you'll be engaged in the process.

I hope it goes well!

Hi Tamar,

I hope that you get moved up to the top of that list right away. I think that your regular doctor being gone was to your advantage. Substitute doc agreed that you need to see your therapist. As I said before I couldn't understand your regular doc saying you're too depressed for therapy.

The title is "Prescription for Trouble, Common drugs, hidden dangers. Tens of millions of people at risk."

Problems w/in th FDA, the absence of leadership w/in FDA, how the FDA is budgeted by drug companies, it's lack of power to enforce its rules, how many serious side effects emerge once a drug is approved by the FDA.

There is a chart titled "Drug Risks The System Missed". It lists 12 drugs and "their known or possible side effects were undetected or underestimated when the FDA approved them for use."

Celecoxib (Celebrex)
Estrogen alone (Premarin & others) w/ progestin (Prempro & others)
Isotretinoin (Accutane)
Malathion (Ovide)
Medroxyprogesterone injections (Depo-Provera)
Mefloquine (Lariam)
Rosuvastatin (Crestor)
Salmeterol (Serevent)
Sibutramine (Meridia)
SSRI's such as sertraline(Zoloft) and other antidepressants such as venlafaxine (Effexor)
Tegaserod (Zelnorm)
Topical immunosuppressants pimecrolimus (Elidel) tacrolimus (Protopic)

*Any typos above are figments of your immagination!

I'm coming in late to this but want to say--

YESSSSSSS!

Sounds like a very promising start to a new year. Will you see the same therapist as before?

Glad you're on the list. Congrats.

Hi Tamar,
I am sorry you are feeling quite stressed and depressed. I wonder why it came up on you suddenly when you seemed to be doing quite well other than your mother in law in the accident. I think some form of meditation or yoga or something like that might help to prevent repeating depression. If you wish, please try it.

Happy to know that you might be seeing your old T again. Personally, I would never go to a male T (way too painful) again but just be cautious and hopefully it will work out well for you.

Thanks everyone

Getting all this support from you all means a great deal to me.

Sorry I haven't been here much recently... My mother-in-law is still in a critical condition and we're spending a lot of time at the hospital. So I'm not really able to get to the computer as much as before.

I'm missing you guys... Hope to get talking to you before too long.

Love,
Tamar

Don't forget to take care of yourself along with everyone else. With kids on one side, and mother in law and husband on the other, and work squeezing in, please make sure that Tamar doesn't get sucked dry. Make time for those things that replenish you and allow you to be there for others.
