sittting with my therapist

Posted by rubenstein on May 18, 2006, at 21:46:38

Sometimes I think just sitting and looking at my therapist, feeling safe, that's the most healing thing for me. KNowing that he cares, that I care, that he will be there and help me get better. Trust....it is so hard....I think I am starting to catch on.

yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!

all the time.

I've pretty much said so, too. That I could just sit there inhis presence and soak in those things.....

your post resonates SO MUCH with me.

(glad you're up to posting....been thinking of you)

Yes, definitely. Most of the time, I really believe that just seeing my therapist - having an hour to talk to her, knowing she is interested and cares - is the most important part of therapy for me. I certainly think the other stuff (insight, etc) is very important too.. but just having someone there helps so much. You're definitely not alone in feeling that way. Sometimes all we need is someone to unconditionally care.

How powerful is it that you can just be with someone and feel better? It is an amazing connection of two spirits, sort of merging in order to feel whole.

Which is why it hurts so much to leave sometimes, I guess. I asked my therapist to not forget about me over the weekend...I need to be held in mind right now, so I can feel him even when I'm not sitting with him.

I'm sad for those who haven't felt this, you know?

Yes, I know the feeling. Feels good, doesn't it?
Maybe that's why so many of us have expressed a desire to be held or hugged by our T's. For me, esp. over the last two weeks, it's been a closeness and connection I've felt. I really opened up to him, and he didn't reject me, or make me feel stupid - he was just really warm and kind.

my goodness R yes...
you brought me good memories i had of my ex T. i do really miss that most of all. its like the aura around him was so peaceful and caring and a sense of only wanting to help and do good was pouring out like an angelic spray.
i long to be in that light again.

treasure that time. as i know you do.

it's like we've been longing for that feeling all our lives and when we finally feel that, its all we can do to just 'bask' in it. to just sit and really appreciate it. afterall, most people get it, we missed out. it's our turn to enjoy it.

revel in it my dear rubenstein.

thanks for all your comments, it solidified my thinking in that area. Off to California tomorrow, I am nervous, I have to get on a plane the first time since the accident that killed my roommates and 4 friends. Thank goodness for Benzos

YES, exactly. It isnt' this way so much with my current T, but with my former T, I would get a lot out of just sitting and being with her, and carrying that feeling with me outside of session. I felt very safe and held (metaphorically and sometimes physically) with her, and sometimes the feeling between us was more comforting than trying to figure out a tangle of words and thoughts. Unfortunately though, my former T didnt' really "get" this and she always tried to fill in silences and would get visibly frustrated when she didn't think we were progressing fast enough or doing enough in sessions. Sometimes it's just about being (as a Buddhist I would have thought she'd understand that. Hmph.).

You're lucky Rubenstein, that you're able to take that in and keep it with you, outside of the time together.

I'm glad for you. It's what I try to work on, but haven't succeeded with so much.
